That's not entirely fair. The judge ruled that he didn't need to be held in jail before/during his trial, which is a different standard. I'm going to call it unlikely that this individual is acquitted of all charges.

Fascism is the new counterculture. They tried to play it down. Tried to tell people it was about other stuff. Nope. Fascism. And due to our education system the only blueprint for fascism that everyone knows is Nazism.

Obviously it's not about this to everyone, but it's a pretty virulent strain within the new "alt right".

speaking of enabling the alt-right, there was intense whiplash in regards to one of the most amazing-looking trailers at Microsoft's E3 presentation, The Last Night. It looks like a mishmash of low-res 2D sprite pixel art mixed with cel-shaded 3D and has an insanely good Blade Runner style to it. I was like "that looks amazing I should wishlist it", and then I almost immediately found out the creator is a hardcore gamergater and the plot is literally "thanks to progressivism and automation, humanity has lost its way"

quote:

Humans first knew the era of survival. Then they knew the era of work. Now they live in the era of leisure. Machines have surpassed human labour not only in strength, but in precision, intellect, and creativity. Stabilised by universal income, people struggle to find their calling or identity, and define themselves by what they consume, rather than what they create.

See, I can see that as coming from a conservative point of view, and kinda Calvinist, but I don't know if I'd call that alt-right. The idea of a post-scarcity economy leading to boredom, albeit from a left-wing perspective, is a central theme in Iain Banks' sci-fi novels.

quote:

It is often argued, at least by people who admit the importance of subject-matter, that a book cannot be ‘good’ if it expresses a palpably false view of life. We are told that in our own age, for instance, any book that has genuine literary merit will also be more or less ‘progressive’ in tendency. This ignores the fact that throughout history a similar struggle between progress and reaction has been raging, and that the best books of any one age have always been written from several different viewpoints, some of them palpably more false than others. In so far as a writer is a propagandist, the most one can ask of him is that he shall genuinely believe in what he is saying, and that it shall not be something blazingly silly. To-day, for example, one can imagine a good book being written by a Catholic, a Communist, a Fascist, pacifist, an anarchist, perhaps by an old-style Liberal or an ordinary Conservative: one cannot imagine a good book being written by a spiritualist, a Buchmanite or a member of the Ku-Klux-KIan. The views that a writer holds must be compatible with sanity, in the medical sense, and with the power of continuous thought: beyond that what we ask of him is talent, which is probably another name for conviction.

Jester is someone I used to read the tweets of a few years back, before he blocked me for asking him what the point was in hacking the ACA website to shut it down.

As I recall he was really bad at taking any kind of advice, anti-Obama to the point he did the above-mentioned hack and retweeted and favorited anyone who defended him up until they disagreed with him like some kind of Freeper. That he would get into a slapfight over who is more patriotic or more of a foreign shill is not really surprising.

Which is a real shame. His biggest problem is a massive ego that's way too easily punctured.

Yeah and I have no idea. But my general idea is that a work of art can basically express a really conservative or reactionary view of the world, and still be good. I'm thinking of Michel Houellebecq, who is basically a hardcore reactionary but who also writes excellent books that do reveal some truths about the contemporary Western world. Though suffice to say I don't think I'd agree with him about what to do about it.

No, Post-cyberpunk is where the world has become so intertwined with technology that you can't really tell them apart anymore. Example being The Diamond Age, where you've got what are basically replicators from star-trek and nanomachine bots that have the ability to hivemind people together.
