I'm so glad that the Tories have managed to gently caress up the election and manifesto so badly that it's going to be the new cultural touchpoint as the nastiest suicide note in history with the hilarious kicker that they're technically in power but won't actually be able to do most of it if they even wanted to.

Do party defections ever happen? I seem to remember a Tory defecting to UKIP.

Would a Tory --> Labour or Tory --> Lib Dem defection be inconceivable if someone felt they shackled their cart to the wrong horse?

Theoretically it's possible and did happen more commonly before the party system became more rigid. It's probably electoral suicide though unless you're in the perfect situation of a) having a slim majority and go to the second place party and b) have confidence that the second parties support would accept you.

Much more likely is to see someone become a rebel and just vote against the whip or an independent.

Quentin Davies is the last MP to go from Conservative to Labour. He lost his seat in the next election.

So, if this is correct, what happens if the Queen's Speech gets voted down? Does it trigger a specific confidence vote before Labour get a go?

I look forward to the formation of government being delayed indefinitely after getting stuck in a procedural infinite loop.

The last person to manage to have anything remotely like a career after crossing the floor from one of the major parties to the other was Shaun Woodward, who went from Tory to Labour, and the only reason he did was because he was parachuted into a safe seat at the next election.

Oh yeah, that's another glaring hole in that ridiculous loving law - voting down the Queen's Speech is no longer an automatic vote of no-confidence so it would then have to go to one, so a fairly small number of MPs could trap the chamber in legislative hysteresis by voting against both.

Corbyn was never PM. A precarious situation with an unruly backbench is a whole lot more toxic when you're trying to hold on to a paper-thin majority with a questionable alliance with religious extremists.

Any Questions? is Question Time for the radio with a lot of what makes Question Time poo poo (The crowd and panel playing for the cameras, jeering, applause) toned down a lot and far more listenable for me. It still has Tories on it who say stuff that will make you hate.

The Private Eye podcast (Page 94) is worth going through the backlogs because a lot of them are deep dives into obscure political topics like licensing laws or how Trident ACTUALLY works.

Talking Politics is the more serious UK political podcast and if you're in for that it's good. It can be a little dry sometimes, but I've enjoyed it.

The best of James O'Brien is good if you can stand James O'Brien. He bounces between enjoyable and annoying to me, he's a bit too eager to argue just for the sake of it on the radio but occasionally he hits on something good. The podcast is better than listening to the Radio for me because it's an occasional roundup of the good stuff with a lot of the stupid poo poo cut out.

The British History podcast isn't a political podcast exactly but it is a good listen.

Beyond that there's a thin amount of UK podcasts. The US are the ones spoiled for choice. Over there I'd recommend Common Sense for a weird lefty with a mix of good and bad ideas that are at least interesting. Pod Save America for a weekly update on American Politics and how Trump is a gently caress up, it's ran by former Obama Staffers so they're pretty knowledgable about just how bad Trump is loving up the White House and where he's obviously lying. Intercepted with Jeremy Scahill is good for some very obviously bitter Democrats doing a deep dive into something America related.

A special mention for the US one for the Five Thirty Eight podcast, which is mainly focused on Polling and has done some recent stuff on why the UK polls are just a bit poo poo and also why our polls were so wild (Spoilers: People were using some very 'unique' methods)

Reveal is a very good investigative reporting podcast that's usually US focused but still very interesting. Their prison stuff was harrowing.

Oh and if you're not listening to The Bugle you're missing the best British bullshit/political podcast of all time.

I have a long drive to work! Podcasts help!
