Ruth Davidson posted:This election taught us that the country wants us to be in government, but they don't want us to have a majority." That seems like a really weird way to read the result to me. Surely the election tells you that half the electorate wanted to have you in government, and half wanted to have Labour in government. You can't take two polar opposite electoral intentions and equate that to a desire for a minority Conservative government. Nobody voted Conservative with the end goal being a minority coalition.

She can't really back off austerity in actual policy, though - too many Tories hunger for the blood of the poor, so she'd end up with massive rebellions. And the non-DUP parties have no reason to enable her government in exchange for anything short of complete surrender, since they all stand to profit from another election except maybe the SNP. e: Thanks for the gang tag!

So, Tories do a load of posturing on Corbyn's turf, giving him unlimited fodder to tear them down with and making him look even more honest and sincere by comparison, whilst (hopefully) giving the more egregiously bloodthirsty poo poo a rest and tearing themselves apart in the process? This is such a relief; for a moment I actually thought the Conservatives might have a moment of self-reflection and realise they needed to get somebody personable like Ruth Davidson as leader and rebrand their FYGM branding to get under-50s to vote for them. It's good to see that they're just going to keep rehashing all their mistakes and failed talking points for another while yet.
