Today talking to the olds at the pub has made me want to strangle pensioners again. Apparently the yoof still don't matter, even if they vote, because they're all idiots who just vote for whoever has the most celeb appeal regardless of policies, because literally everyone under 30 in the country is equivalent to a class of school dropouts one of them taught once. Also people only voted for Labour as a protest vote, and if we have another election it's going to tank the economy, their boss said so, and the Tories would win a massive majority because the banks and megacorps would give them infinite money if they ran again and this'd mean they won.

Conservative Home has another post mortem article up as they go into depth about how hosed they feel they are now May's appointed Gove. http://www.conservativehome.com/thetorydiary/2017/06/the-cabinet-reappointment-that-could-put-corbyn-in-power.html Highlight: quote:This is not a campaigning world any of us should want to live in. But some serious thought needs to go into how the Party should handle social media in an election that will surely come before 2022. Buying up Facebook adverts is no substitute for getting a message from a mate. What CCHQ needs most a businessman-type politician at the top who can review its campaigning effectiveness, make recommendations, and see the necessary reforms through. There are not many of these around; the most suitable is probably Jeremy Hunt. McLoughlin has the benefit of having been in place for a year, and at least knows where all the bodies are buried. None the less, he has Cabinet committee duties elsewhere, and CCHQ needs its Chairman in residence.

Man, it's a good thing the Tories aren't dependent on a regional branch of their party with a popular, charismatic leader who's gone on the record saying gay rights are more important to her than party loyalty. They'd be absolutely hosed if that was the case and they kept going down this road.

Obviously she has more reason to care than most, but she's also a Tory and so scores negative for integrity automatically.

Propping up this government (she isn't directly, she an MSP not an MP, but the Scottish seats were pretty much won by her and you'd be hard pressed to name another current Scottish Tory aside from David Mundell) hurts both; if LGBT rights look like they're backsliding, or sectarianism in Scotland comes back to the fore during marching season, it's pretty much all on the Scots branch of the Tory party to rebel or take a hit.

I think so long as people go into Hardcore History aware of what it is, pop history, it's fine. He tells select stories from history in his own way, which personally I think loses a lot of appeal the more you hear it, and just starts getting annoying once you notice how much he abuses boxing metaphors. Pop history has its place, certainly, but you should be aware of its limitations and not just take everything Carlin says at face value.

I do wish I'd known this going in, I had listened to quite a few of his shows uncritically before it rubbed up against an area I was familiar with, and I do wonder now how much I "know" about other periods is based on unsubstantiated stories from less than reliable sources. I'm currently enjoying Mike Duncan's Revolutions--I don't think he goes for the sensational story the way Carlin does and he does begin episodes with corrections occasionally (something Carlin never, ever does), but who knows with history podcasts, if you're not a historian or willing to do your own research, anybody can be bullshitting you.
