Agreed. I do wish I'd known this going in, I had listened to quite a few of his shows uncritically before it rubbed up against an area I was familiar with, and I do wonder now how much I "know" about other periods is based on unsubstantiated stories from less than reliable sources. I'm currently enjoying Mike Duncan's Revolutions--I don't think he goes for the sensational story the way Carlin does and he does begin episodes with corrections occasionally (something Carlin never, ever does), but who knows with history podcasts, if you're not a historian or willing to do your own research, anybody can be bullshitting you.

I'm not a Rome expert (I'm a Byzaboo and he stopped with Romulus Augustulus :negative:) but the modest amount I know about Rome and what Mike Duncan presented in History of Rome lined up pretty well, and given that his podcast won loads of awards I'd expect any big problems would have been called out. Dude seems strongly committed to accuracy or at least reporting the current strongest theories.

Imagine, on another topic, thinking that Jeremy Hunt is the man for any job more complex than counting a pair of sticks to make sure you still have two sticks.

He's pretty good at his job of making rcn nurses prep to ballot for our first strike ever. The poll before the election showed 91% in favour of industrial action and about 70% in favour of strikes.

Probably our only strike if it goes ahead because they'll slam us on the same rules as the police afterwards.

That said, I feel obliged to plug The Fall of Rome, which is by a guy I know through the internet, a history PhD at that. Late Antiquity is his speciality. It's not a narrative history in the way a lot of history podcasts end up being, but it's very interesting. If that period is at all interesting to you I highly recommend it.

Someone needs to do a podcast covering the history of the various social & intellectual socialist movements through the ages. I'd listen to that.

Ages and ages back now, but John Oliver repeating bits over and over again is really just because that's what American writers think you literally need to do to be funny. I remember reading an article by a writer for SNL who said they'd been writing jokes with the same formula since the 80s because it still worked.

I honestly can't imagine how creatively bankrupt you'd have to be to want to write like that, but I guess it's a cultural thing.

In the UK there are laws that prevent the kind of insane spending that happens during political campaigns in the USA. We certainly still have professional campaign managers running things (Lynton Crosby managed the Conservative campaign), but thankfully there's a limit on spending as well as other limits like no political adverts and supposedly impartial TV coverage

It's not quite Alex jones, but it seemed to be pretty far down the American libertarian hole. In my head him and joe rogen fill the same place, appealing to "real working men" with easily digestible parables about how someone is beating the system, mixed in with love for weed and bizarre conspiracies born out of the desire to make everything simple to digest.

I maybe biased how ever because the one I sort of remember touched on Syria and he was hilariously bad with basic facts as well as being disagreeable with my personal outlook.

I feel like I should say a couple words in Carlin's defense here. He sounds like a conspiracy kook and even describes himself as a kook, but I think that's a consequence of him coming up through talk radio. He's a libertarian, but he's a libertarian you can talk to. I don't agree with everything he says, but I think generally he argues in good faith and with some nuance. He's certainly not FYIGM or a closet Nazi like some other internet bastards. I could say more, but I think that would really belong in the USPOL thread.

Work has begun to make the next manifesto Institute for Fiscal Studies-proof: not by junking spending commitments that attracted voters, but by iron-cladding its priorities, costings and revenue-raisings. The Tories’ “magic money tree” jibe has become Labour’s friend.

The idea that the Tories abandoning austerity would put "tanks on Labour's lawn" seems a bit silly. It points far more questions at the Tories

i) Was austerity a mistake?
ii) Why stop it now?
iii) Why are you not going as far as comrade Corbyn?
iv) How will we balance the books / pay off the national credit card?

If you stick to a bullshit meme narrative you have to see it through. This won't work for the same reason Labour's "controls on immigration" didn't work, nobody wants you to be the light version of the other party.
