I teach at a university in a field that touches upon social and economic issues, and can confirm that socialist arguments are disproportionately accepted whereas conservative arguments tend to be firmly bebutted because that's what happens when you apply a degree of critical reasoning and examine the evidence

e:seriously, how do people notice that educated people who spend their lives thinking about this poo poo disproportionately tend to disagree with them and jump to the conclusion that obviously they must all be biased.

If the poors get more money then they'll only spend it, which means that it disappears from the economy entirely. And they'll all stop working, because only the rich are incentivized by more money, proles are content with Tennent's Super and a pittance from the Post Office.

Had a chat with the Chief Exec (mid 60s) of the organisation I work at today who said that, after a lifetime of voting Conservative, he voted Labour for the first time. He said he was absolutely horrified by their manifesto and said Corbyn's appearance on Question Time convinced him he could be PM.

Also I found out my Grandad voted Labour, which isn't a huge surprise as he's been a wavering Tory/Labour voter for a while. But he did also despise Corbyn up until a month ago and likes him now.

It's the loss of the primacy that's really bothering them. You see this in various places, people going "well leftists were mean to me so if anything I'm MORE conservative now!" which is a legitimate threat when you're the only voting bloc that matters: as soon as there's a bloc with parity it becomes utterly meaningless. You're an older person, it's a given that you'll vote Conservative (and show up). People will stop chasing that now.

This is part of what hosed May so bad.

the amount of older conservatives on friends FB I've seen claim Labour are bad people because some yoofs were rude to them is genuinely astonishing. The idea that we need to give the slightest poo poo about their pride when they vote for people to die really makes it hard to feel sympathy for their fully deserved total political abandonment, and worse, hard to feel sympathy for the older people who aren't caricatures of hate.

Yeah that's a big part of it. This is a generation which is used to having its voice heard on everything, and which has used its demographic power to bend the system to its will for decades. Now they're suddenly not the sole arbiters of What Just Makes Sense to do and they're furious about it.
