Out of curiosity, what is the US rate like? I assume it's either really good or really bad.

Basically failing on HIV care is failing the GLBT community which was where I was coming from in the comment I made and I was kind of surprised she didn't accept that because it was in epidemiology.

US HIV is 75% gay, 25% straight, with an overall incidence of ~.5%

UK HIV is 50% gay, 50% straight, with an overall incidence of ~.15%

Ah yes but you see Corbyn wouldn't stand up to Putin because...uh yeah I don't really understand my dad's logic from here.

well, yeah the generation that lived through WW2 and voted to build the welfare state are cool, the generation that came after are (mostly) entitled shits who sold off after all their parents' hard work to benefit themselves. The lesson we need to take from that is that if we do succeed in getting a socialist agenda through, we need to become vigilant that our kids who won't know what living under the Tories is like don't turn out to be the same spoilt brats the boomers turned out to be.

It's reassuring at least that so many people in my generation have voted Labour. Hopefully the proportions remain roughly the same for the next decade or 2, predicating a socialist Labour landslide at some point :newdanger:

Yeah just post the same story but instead the professor picks one student randomly, that guy gets the average of the top 5 marks because his granddad was mates with the king, everyone else gets the average mark no matter how well they do individually, and if you get an E or under you're kicked out of future exams but you also starve to death.

All entrants should donate £5 (plus however much extra you feel is appropriate) to The Samaritans and frankly anybody who chuckled at Ober's prediction should probably also donate, possibly £69 or some other amusing number, to them too.

Interestingly (excluding Ober's predictions) the mean for the entries was:

CON: 320.75
LAB: 250.25
LD: 5.5
Other: 68.58333333

making us collectively considerably closer to the final result than most of the pollsters.

One of my colleagues openly admitted that he thinks voting Labour would be better for society and then said he was gonna go Tory, 'cause he's co-owner of the company and has kids, and has to consider company taxes being increased if voting Labour.

The other one said she thought Tories hosed their campaign, but May was still 'absolutely the right choice'' and expressed her dislike of Corbyn, saying we (young ones) didn't live through '70s when socialist Labour was in power.

One of the young ones was torn because her dad explained to her that under Labour manifesto they'd only have £100,000 of their house value as a usable asset, and the other £500,000 would automatically go to care, and she'd rather they had the option to decide what to do with that money? I don't even know.

While we're discussing parent chat, I had a very pleasant surprise today. I'm just back from my stag weekend (getting married in a fortnight!!) and met up with my folks in town to spend some time and seek advice about marriage, speeches and poo poo. Now, my parents are to put it bluntly spectacularly wealthy (hugely successful retired accountant and freshly retired tax barrister, live in Grays Inn, own multiple properties here and abroad etc), and tend towards being incredibly reactionary and conservative. They're lovely people, but we Do Not Talk Politics since I swung to the left.

Anyway, a couple of weeks back I met my mum for lunch and bit the bullet- she 'deeply admires' Theresa May and deeply distrusted Corbs. I asked her to at least read the labour manifesto, then put it to her that despite my very hosed up mental health history that I'm still standing and hell, happy due to the support network both emotional and financial that my family has provided. That there are so many other parents out there who wouldn't be able to help like they did me if their kid had a sudden crisis or accident. And that she should bear in mind how she felt each time she got word that I was in hospital or having a crisis, and how it would feel if there was literally nothing she could do to help fill the gaps of support left by our devastated health services.

She voted for labour for the first time since 1997 and the second time in her life. I will admit, I cried a bit when I found out.
