Hello, american here, I've been reading the thread for the past few days because UK politics are far less depressing in recent times than US politics. I don't need anything explained to me, I've read UKMT threads before so I am familiar with most of this stuff. First off congrats on the recent Labour gains, I'm glad to see some progress for the left somewhere in the world. Second, last night I had a very strange dream sparked by this thread, it involved all the UK political figures being super heroes/villains in secret. Corbyn was a communist robot who gained sentience, took down Stalin and then fled to the UK to pursue true marxism. May could transform into a thatcher/mecha godzilla hybrid and there was a cult that worshiped her by chanting "Strong & Stable" from the rooftops as she destroyed the buildings and crushed her own supporters under foot. Lord Buckethead was exactly what he claims to be, but had been secretly sent by benevolent aliens to watch over earthlings. Very strange.

His biggest sin was assuming he had to play the media game as practised by New Labour. His most popular policies and appearances were when he refused to do that. And hardly a sin he alone is responsible for - the media's method of gaming the system towards jumping on on-the-fly remarks etc. meant a lot of politicians were sensibly micro-managing of their media message. Of course it backfired when those strikes were wrong at a time when negotiations are still going on, both sides need to drop the rhetoric, get to the negotiating table and work this out. x5

the Refounding Labour changes were wholly pushed by the Progress lot and roundly denounced by Left Futures (which was Lansman's vehicle before Momentum was a thing) although, it turns out, these changes were what enabled Corbyn to climb to power the last couple of years should really give every UK policymaker a great deal of pause before thinking "hmm, obviously everything predicts that this rule change X will benefit my faction Y in the future"

the only big gamble that appears to have paid off for the party faction that actually pushed it is Cameron's decision to call the Scottish referendum, and even that was a very close-run thing for everything else, it's "well, you see, according to the polling it made sense at the time" why did Cameron call for the Breferendum? because he hadn't expected a Tory landslide and had promised to do so if he got one. a horse that was supposed to be flogged to the Lib Dems wound up carrying him off into the sunset

I know it won't happen but my preferred shadow cabinet would definitely have Thornberry and McDonnell in place and Ed as Home Sec. A lot of the criticism of Abbott is coming from a racist and sexist place, but the fact that she doesn't go on TV well just makes her a big political liability.
