Theoretically, Labour policy is set by Annual Conference. In practice, though, not really, unless you count us members all voting him in with thumping majorities every time there's a leadership election.

Anyone actually been to Conference, btw? Any good?

currently the Leader can appoint the shad cab - this was a Blairite idea that was seized upon by Ed Miliband in the wake of the 2010 defeat; it was pushed through in 2011

the NEC can change the rule to restore shad cab elections by the PLP; this has both Labour left and Labour right support and opposition. in retrospect many Blairite ideas for discouraging committee hijacking were correctly recognised by Ed Miliband to be ways of mobilizing a mass movement - albeit one that mobilised too late to help him

Yeah it was part of what endeared me to Corbyn early on that, on top of his policies, he was opposed to selling Ed down the river.

Hello, american here, I've been reading the thread for the past few days because UK politics are far less depressing in recent times than US politics. I don't need anything explained to me, I've read UKMT threads before so I am familiar with most of this stuff. First off congrats on the recent Labour gains, I'm glad to see some progress for the left somewhere in the world.

Second, last night I had a very strange dream sparked by this thread, it involved all the UK political figures being super heroes/villains in secret. Corbyn was a communist robot who gained sentience, took down Stalin and then fled to the UK to pursue true marxism. May could transform into a thatcher/mecha godzilla hybrid and there was a cult that worshiped her by chanting "Strong & Stable" from the rooftops as she destroyed the buildings and crushed her own supporters under foot. Lord Buckethead was exactly what he claims to be, but had been secretly sent by benevolent aliens to watch over earthlings.

Very strange.

His biggest sin was assuming he had to play the media game as practised by New Labour. His most popular policies and appearances were when he refused to do that. And hardly a sin he alone is responsible for - the media's method of gaming the system towards jumping on on-the-fly remarks etc. meant a lot of politicians were sensibly micro-managing of their media message.

Of course it backfired when those strikes were wrong at a time when negotiations are still going on, both sides need to drop the rhetoric, get to the negotiating table and work this out. x5

Funny part of this, is Ashworth is very much in the Cooper wing on the party and was widely derided as committing career suicide among his allies and the press when he took up the shadow health brief, now he's sitting pretty.

He's been good during the election campaign. The one thing is when I see him I get reminded of John Woodcock, & have a heart attack in fury, but otherwise yeah. He had a good campaign, though I think Gardiner was obviously the star of the centre left members of the Shadow Cabinet.

I like a lot of the stuff said in the New Statesman article. Though I think for the sake of unity you have to give one of the big faces a position in the Shadow Cabinet, & honestly Home seems like the most open spot. But bring in a new generation is a really good idea, a sign for the future. Also interested to see who gets the Scotland spot & who gets Northern Ireland. Dave Anderson to stay at NI?

although, it turns out, these changes were what enabled Corbyn to climb to power

the only big gamble that appears to have paid off for the party faction that actually pushed it is Cameron's decision to call the Scottish referendum, and even that was a very close-run thing

for everything else, it's "well, you see, according to the polling it made sense at the time"

why did Cameron call for the Breferendum? because he hadn't expected a Tory landslide and had promised to do so if he got one. a horse that was supposed to be flogged to the Lib Dems wound up carrying him off into the sunset

Eh, don't have to remind me, Danny Alexander managed to take a safe as hell Liberal seat I live in & sunk it, it was BEAUTIFUL. Oh the schadenfreude. Alexander, aside from selling out most LibDem voters, was a loving useless local MP who did gently caress all apart from ring his hands when we had an immigration problem with my brother-in-law. I still remember the glorious "How many LibDems have lost their deposit?" watch on Twitter. (it was 340. They lost 375 in 2017 according to the BBC. Which is hysterical. Lib Dem fightback)
