True, but the longer it staggers on the more actual Tories will get to almost actually attempt to do things, so there's a careful balance to strike here.

I've never really thought about it but a "Police and Crime Commissioner" sounds like the kind of role that would turn up in a Discworld book when a drive for efficiency forces the City Watch and Thieves' Guild to merge.

Apologies for linking to The Sun but an interesting article on the Tories cutting one of their major manifesto pledges at the urging of the cabinet because the manifesto was too unpopular. The policy? No, not fox hunting, capping energy prices, one of the few decent proposals they had!

The best bit is this

quote:

The PM is instead preparing to outline a big investment in smart meters to deliver greater competition and bring bills down.

One source said: “We have to get back to our free market roots.”

The fetishisation of the free market is so loving dumb. Look, I'm sorry, I don't want to spend an hour every month on price comparison websites. I have better things I'd rather do after work. Also the idea that the energy market is a free market in any way just beggars belief, it's much like the railways.

Key word is attempt, there's not much that they can get through the wets, drys, business Tories, Euroskeptics, ScotCons, and evangelical Ulstermen.

Otoh I'm not sure I want to see the bastard abomination of an act that they can.

Plus, while smart meters do mean customers will pay for exactly what they use, that doesn't help if the energy companies can just keep their prices artificially high.

If anyone didn't know, the reason that the interconnected national smart meter network is delayed is because Capita is in charge of it

Abbott has revealed that the illness that caused her break from campaigning was Type 2 Diabetes, because her blood sugars were 'out of control'.

She also says that she feels ready to get back to work. I feel bad for saying it, but maybe she should move to a less high profile role. If stress was the underlying cause of her issue (by exacerbating her diabetes) it's hardly going to go away. She can still make a valuable contribution in another ministerial job and it gives Corbyn a little breathing room to reshuffle one of the top jobs.

If she's recently diagnosed it may well have just come at a bad time and she's just getting to grips with everything. Could well be fine once she's settled into it. However that said she has historically been less than stellar at PR stuff so I still wouldn't be opposed to her being removed from the limelight on purely tactical grounds.

Funnily enough both of my parents (dull centrists the both of them) have told me they have become fond of Corbyn but still find Abbot really offputting.

Aren't the smart meters being rolled out in a completely typical UK way, where each retail supplier wants to install their own rather than the metering being done by each distribution network operator and then billing information passed to the retail provider?

*generalises wildly* right now it's a system where, say you're with British Gas, you can get a smart meter display that talks to the electric and gas meters to get their readings, and then it passes this on to a network device that sends the data over a sort of mobile phone connection to your supplier

If you switch supplier, they may or may not be able to talk to your network device. If they can't, your smart meter doesn't work at all - not even for getting readings to send them yourself. The display can't even find the meters in your home network, the whole thing hinges on your energy supplier remotely allowing it to happen. It's bad

The idea is to roll out a universal system where all the smart meters just communicate with a central system, and energy suppliers can get your data from there, so everything just works. Capita is in charge and that private sector efficiency is working out as excellent as usual
