Gort posted:Ah yes, the famous free market industries, banking and energy production. Don't know how it works in the UK, but in Norway the company that sells you the electrical power is a 100% financial construct that does nothing of worth. Just a bunch of financial advisors getting paid big bucks for "trading" energy on the "open" market. Most of our power is hydro. The dams were mostly built by local companies mostly 100% owned by the local government. The same company produced electricity and laid the infrastructure transporting the electricity to your light bulb. This worked fine. But at some point the government figured out the "market" should be "open" and "competitive". The local companies were split in two (or three). On company maintaining infrastructure and producing electricity (In some cases two companies) and one selling electricity to the consumer. This last company is pure rent seeking and adds nothing of value. A bunch of them popped up "competing" for my kroners. Who the gently caress has time to compare electricity prices all day to save a buck?? Most of my electricity bill is still going to the proper company anyway for "renting infrastructure". As longs as it's free trade I guess.

General China posted:You forget the OPEC crisis. Inflation was at 10 or 20 percent for a long time in the early 70s. The OPEC crisis was only part of the cause of stagflation. The budget I alluded to was where the Heath government, flush with the widespread adoption of credit cards, had the genius idea of cutting taxes while keeping spending the same because they thought the spike in consumption caused by the citizenry having more disposable income would keep the revenue rolling in anyway. Inflation was already starting to spike when OPEC started getting ornery - the rising price of fuel was just the finishing blow.

There's a similarly convoluted system here in NZ. Anyone can build a dam or windfarm and start generating power, but that power has to be sent over the transmission network, which is owned and maintained by the government. It then comes off the transmission network in any given town and onto the local distribution network, which is owned and maintained by private companies, who then charge another, separate company who sell the power to the public and pay the people generating it. It's actually not a bad setup, I'm just mad because it's designed to make my life miserable- I'm an arborist working around the lines, but the overlaps are never clear and every company has different regulations and procedures so you never know if you're going to catch a bollocking for operating under the wrong work authority or only putting 1 metre clearance on a tree when they specify 1.5 or whatever Basically bureaucracy is a splinter in the eye of the working man

It's obvious within ten seconds he's trying to carefully word his questions to create some kind of inescapable trap, and then getting angry when Ken tries to explain his views instead of giving an answer that would be the headline of tomorrow's paper. Then when he doesn't get the answer he wants he decides to rant instead of asking a question. He might be quite justified in his opinions, but it demonstrates that he has absolutely no respect for the committee process or what it's trying to achieve at all. He just views it as another platform to try and spin a narrative. Rewatching this has hardened me against letting any of the so-called 'moderates' back into the shadow cabinet. Thanks!

ThomasPaine posted:Low but not impossible. Sun is a bad source In this case the sun is spinning a lie from the truth. Sinn Fein MPs travelling to London and making use of the office space given to them is normal in every Parliament, it doesn't say anything about whether they'll take their seats (they won't). It doesn't make any sense for either side, even with Sinn Fein the Tory-DUP still have a majority. If we're making up crazy hypotheticals, one might as well imagine the Tories and the SNP doing a deal for full scottish independence, no referendum required. At least in that hypothetical the Conservatives come out with a majority of the seats post indy. Side note, I'm so glad the scottish referendum was before the EU referendum so we don't have to put up with Sexit as a news term.

Jesus gently caress, I posted about the fire in one of the C-SPAM threads and someone found this, from November of last year: https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/kctmo-playing-with-fire/quote:It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders. We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the every day management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster.

A lot of the early eyewitness stuff reported people trapped on the upper floors, waving from windows, flashing torches, screaming for help. The building now looks like this https://twitter.com/Natalie_Oxford/status/874829173738569729 So I think we're talking about the landlords being responsible for a bunch of deaths at this point. Really hope I'm wrong.
