Assuming you're referring to the rightmove link earlier: you can get a room in London for a lot less than that, but you'll be a lot further out and it'll be a lot grottier than that ad. I think the standard among my mid-20s friends is £400-£500/month for a room in a 3-4 bed flatshare. I think that's a ~50% premium on the rest of the country? Worth it if you're a careerist or work in a high-wage industry, madness otherwise.

we're moving over to month to month soon so in the interests of protecting ourselves from a snap eviction we were circling out on the map, looking at where stuff started to get a bit cheaper than the peoples republic of hackney and when we got to catford I just tapped out. Here I thought my place was pretty shabby 'cause most of the inventory check was some combination of 'peeling/cracked/damaged/crooked'.

ETA: Then again, my last two previous places not in London had literal hole in the roof/roof caving in from storm damage, so still improvement.

Thankfully the news seems to be moving quickly on to how residents concerns about fire safety were repeatedly ignored by those in authority. It makes a nice change from the usual lovely line of 'we can't possibly talk about who is to blame at this tragic time'.

It's a sad loving commentary on our society that houses that were perfectly safe and well built in the 70s have been rendered death traps by ignorant managers slapping on tacky plastic cladding to make the place look more modern. gently caress safety, it's all about the optics.

I made these a while back, and you might find them useful. They're specifically for my commute to Green Park, but they'd likely look similar for any other central London job. I recommend you right click and open them in their own tab - they're pretty big. I also didn't know much about map services, which is why they're artifact-y as hell.

First up we've got house prices, which are like rents but have much better data (thanks, Land Registry):

Next, we've got commute time to Green Park using tube, bus and walking:

And finally there's how expensive the area is compared to all other areas with the same commute :

I think most new builds have them. New houses in Wales apparently also have to come with sprinklers. People have been suggesting they be retrofitted to old properties but the government has been resisting. It's also recently decided that there's no need to have sprinklers in schools, presumably after another drug-fuelled communion with Satan or however it is they make policy these days.
