We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror.
So at this stage I imagine the only thing to do is wait it out. Pretty clear nobody left inside is going to be alive by now. Given the size of it I'd now be getting worried about the structural stability - if it decided to collapse it would make things 10x worse than they already are.

Very possible. Think of all the combustible materials inside those flats. To add, most if not all of the windows are now out, providing a constant supply of oxygen from the outside world into the building. In addition to this its a high rise, the wind blowing through those blown out windows will lap up any smouldering embers and potentially stir up further fires within the building, another problem LFB face after getting the main beast of the fire under control are further small pocket fires starting up again. The chap posting earlier and designated UKMT Fire Commissioner can explain it much better than me.

Note: I am not a fire expert, this information is from knowledge I've picked up over time from sharing the odd smoke break with KFRS crew and general Major Incident guidance.
Thermal mass too. You can snuff out a candle wick with your fingertips, but you can leave the contents of a coal fire in a covered bucket for half an hour and still have them light up again when exposed to air. Now up that to the mass of a building.

e: ^^ And up it to the size of a mountain and things just get crazy.

Also remember that even after the fires stop, firefighters might need to assess whether its safe to ever go inside, as the fires could weaken it to the point of collapse (if it hasn't already by then).

Weirdly it's likely to be fine. Firefighters were commenting on TV about how the concrete core construction is extremely fire resistant, and that they don't have any concerns about the buildings structural integrity even now.

Say what you like about the building, they built it right in the 70s. It took our modern day level of hubris and greed to totally gently caress up all the carefully designed protection and bring about this disaster.

There's confidence it won't collapse now, I think. Imagine the job the recovery/identification/investigation people now have though. Jesus.

Emergency services isn't something that you're should scrimp on or cut to the bone.

Yeah fine normal operations it looks like all that extra capacity is just wasting money, but when something like this or the London Bridge attacks happens then you quickly need all the capacity you can get. Unoccupied firefighters, ambulances, or police are your insurance policy not a political cost saving opportunity.

This whole situation feels like the tragic culmination of austerity politics, and hearing from the people who have missing friends or family is absolutely heartbreaking.

Going to be grim work for the poor bastards who have to go up there and start sifting through the wreckage. Like actual harrowing stuff I don't think you could ever unsee. I'm never comfortable with this weird semi-deification of the forces/services we have a lot in the UK but I can honestly only take my hat off to those guys. Huge respect.

But if anybody took the time to look at just what the emergency services do during, 'normal' operations they'd know that nobody is ever really unoccupied. The Fire Service tackle much more than fires. They frequently assist Police and Paramedics during incidents not involving fire. Example: RTC requiring assistance of Fire Service kit and expertise in safely getting an injured person out of a wreck. Community Safety events. Remember chip pan fire demonstrations in school yards? Door knocks to give general safety advice? Regular inspections into not only large residential structures but commercial structures to ensure safety regulations are adhered to in order to help prevent further potential catastrophes? Last one does still happen in the commercial sector AFAIK but I remember in the last few years I worked retail before leaving I did notice our fire inspections went from being once every quarter to once a year... if they could manage it.

Maybe it's just me, but is anyone else sensing a real anger from people after this fire that wasn't there even during the terrorist attacks?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems a high rise built with a core like this should be fitted with sprinklers in main areas in the case of a fire spreading outside a flat, with obviously cladding that isn't going to serve as a wick to spread fire between floors. With the chimney effect of a core stairwell potentially acting as a chimney, would that help in any meaningful way or would the water output on any and all floors do anything to keep a fire from climbing?
