baka kaba posted:I dunno, that looks more like "if you're part of any disturbance/make life difficult for anyone who might visit the area for any reason, you'll pay for it". The ball bit is the 'official' reason for sending the letter with the threats - it gives them deniability and sends a message that isn't an explicit challenge I imagine this is probably true, although from a more scared shitless clusterfuck position than a mob-boss break-your-legs position. I was doing some work with people working in social care back when the Baby P disaster hit, I bet this will be like that times a thousand behind the scenes. Basically people trying to sort it out frantically but not really beleiving its their fault and saying they require more money. Actually "we don't have enough money to do this properly" is basically an eternal refrain in the UK public sector unless you lucked into decent EU funding. Uh oh.

To add to the corvid conversation: A couple of days ago we found a fledgling jackdaw wandering around our garden with all the feathers on top of its head pecked off. After keeping it secure with access to food and watching for cats and gulls for a few hours, we consulted with a friend who works in wildlife rescue who told us that it had probably been evicted from the nest for some reason, so we took it to a bird rescue place. They said the same thing, it was underweight and had been violently ejected from it's nest to die. The next morning I saw the jackdaws that live in our chimney take their other children out for a walk/fly. So now we call them the McCawnns.

I'm inclined to think the notice was a balls up in timing rather than a threat. Given it's dated the 14th, it was probably queued up earlier. It's terrible timing and they should've put a stop on sending out stuff like that, but I don't think it's anything more than a total lack of tact.

TACD posted:Didn't the government accidentally release an incorrect press release just a few days ago about having already done the DUP deal? Why would you write a press release for an imaginary situation? Serious answer - it's because press offices will try and have most eventualities covered so they can rush out a pre-approved release the moment something happens. There's all kinds of bullshit around "getting in front of the story" and "seizing narratives" and poo poo but it's actually because PRs are lazy twats who can't actually write so need fifteen layers of approval and editing before they can release anything. Of course this also allows you to slip out a release "accidentally" either as a trial balloon or in the hope of forcing your opponents to react.

Why would you write a press release for an imaginary situation? The same reason the papers have pre-written obituaries ready to go for load of famous people, so that when it does happen you can just change the dates and get the story out. Though obviously this "accident" is just a blatant loving lie to cover furious back-peddling.

deletebeepbeepbeep posted:What are the odds of the protest tonight properly kicking off. Yesterday I'd have definitely thought the chances were near 100%, there seemed to be a genuine fury in the air, today people seem more restrained. Still angry, but there's a lot more depression and despair there. Compare the receptions that Khan and Leadsom got - I thought there was a pretty good chance it could all have kicked off yesterday afternoon, but while Leadsom still got a hostile response it wasn't a "Oops, better start boarding up the windows" hostility. Of course I'm basing all this off what I'm seeing on the telly so we don't know how much of a filter there is there, and of course there's always a chance that the police could do something very silly.
