Martian Manfucker posted:what cost to other people's lives could she POSSIBLY mean Grenfell Tower, of course, was public housing, which changes the calculation somewhat. And yet, even there, trade-offs have to be made. The government spends money on a great number of things, many of which save lives. Every dollar it spends on installing sprinkler systems cannot be spent on the health service, or national defense, or pollution control. Would more lives be saved by those measures or by sprinkler systems in public housing? It’s hard to say. It’s possible that by allowing large residential buildings to operate without sprinkler systems, the British government has prevented untold thousands of people from being driven into homelessness by higher housing costs. It’s also possible that a sprinkler system would not have saved lives in that Grenfell inferno, as the fire apparently spread outside the building as well as within it. Hold these possibilities in mind before condemning those who chose to spend government resources on other priorities. Regulatory decisions are never without costs, and sometimes their benefits are invisible.

It's hilarious that she went with the "well if housing gets expensive and people have to live farther away, there might be more auto fatalities" because I bet she'd sing a different tune if the discussion was about, say, real estate prices forcing people to live farther away from their job in NY or SF.

cat doter posted:considering this isn't even factually true, her entire thesis crumbles with even a second of thought Here's the truth: every dollar you spend on building inspectors to double check the sprinklers work is one less dollar we spend on the troops. And hell, since we already got the people, we're forced to cut money by giving them less food. You're taking food out of a future veterans mouth by requiring all these expensive laws and I, frankly, will not stand for it.

It's such a weird point. Maybe he moves further away and has to commute and dies in a car accident. Maybe he stays where he is and walks to work and ends up getting stabbed in a mugging that he would've avoided in a car. Literally anything could happen to this guy, because that's what you can do when you invent a man. So loving what Megan?
