Yes, I would vote for a tory minority government and then let it collapse on its own, personally. The bigger a majority that labour can secure the better, and the more the tories gently caress up brexit the better any Labour deal will look. It would be a right shitter if Labour got in and then burned all its goodwill trying to make brexit work.

This is silly. The brexit deal will have such a lasting impact, if Labour can mitigate some of the damage by keeping workers protection and safety standards that you know the tories would take the chance to dump that's more important than the election game.

I don't think that a Labour minority government could secure those either. A strong majority perhaps but even that, I think, would stand a reasonable chance of causing losses at the next GE, once Labour take government all the scrutiny is going to be on them, not the tories, they need to be in the strongest position they can be if they're going to enact any of the manifesto.

ordinarily this would be a point where the Labour leader would carefully try to tack a line independent of sudden new with-friends-like-these - not open attacks, given the public mood, but not something which would open the party to criticism for endorsing largely-unvetted organisations should they turn out to have tons of skeletons in the closet, or should they suddenly do something foolish

the Corbyn statement is well-finagled, in calling for full participation without committing to particular form or substance. likewise carefully dancing around the commitment to local-rehousing, thanks to Sharma's amazingly careless remark, without committing Labour to the same itself

he may come to regret attacking the £5 million number if he is suddenly Prime Minister in a fortnight and turns out to be similarly unable to find more couch change, though

Barnier told them to gently caress off and was openly discussing confidential matters last monday, I've honestly no idea why they announced they'd go back this early. One of the concerns he mentioned was the government wasn't able to provide a date for negotiations, but I think that was more a concern of competency than an attempt to troll britain into being told to gently caress off again

which is definitely what will happen

You need at least 22 working days between the publication of notice of election and the poll itself but before that you have to dissolve parliament I think, and it's good practice to leave enough time that any business currently going through parliament can be wound up. It's pretty flexible but the governing party generally has an interest in keeping it as short as practicable. 6 weeks is the generated accepted minimum.

the question is where do you put it? If you're ikeologically limited to market-based solutions there's not many places to spend millions of pounds in a useful way in a week.

I feel that's already answered by being ideologically committed to nationalising Kensington though. It's a good answer, and those aren't bad assets.

I just want to add that I googled this a bit more, it seems there was a complaint made against him buying a house while taking 6 months out as a chancellor, in Grenfell, which then received a major value boost during the redevelopment of Greenfel. The complaint being, that since the councillor worked on the Grenfell redevelopment plans in 2009, he had access to priveleged information that concerned the future market value of the area.

I wonder how hard the spin team would be working to stretch that just a little closer to "councillor put shiny flammable things on a building to flip a house for profit" if they hadn't just got fired.

no, I do believe that Prime Ministers and even whole Cabinets do not unilaterally pass budgets, though!

May is probably raiding the DCLG budget for 5 million quid from some other fund, probably a sinking or maintenance fund; it is annoyingly difficult to identify exactly what statutory power she is basing this fund on. it is supposedly in addition to, rather than a political retitling of, existing Bellwin scheme funding

if it turns out there's a money tree somewhere (cough cough), largely-Tory suburban councils will be lining up to ask why they cannot obtain anything more than Bellwin relief themselves from floods, whereas a London council can instantly get moolah from the PM herself
