Touching on some discussion earlier regarding trains and their costs, I have to say it is unbelievable just how expensive rail travel has become for anyone living outside London. A one year season ticket just to get to my girlfriend's costs a hair under £1000 more than a years worth of PCP payments for my car. Take away insurance and road tax, and that leaves me about £400 to go towards petrol and consumables. Take into consideration all the times I have to go to places other than my girlfriends, and all the times she comes with me (thus requiring her own ticket if we went by train), and I am convinced if we were stuck using trains and busses I would be considerably more out of pocket. The main issue is stumping up a deposit to get the whole thing off the ground.

R. Mute posted:Good post, but I'd also like to ask everyone to spare a thought (and a pound) for the less "sexy" charities. I was manning an info booth for one of those at a hippy festival the other week. They're an organisation that focuses on improving healthcare in a couple of African countries - but they don't focus on a specific disease, they don't build hospitals, none of that. They're all about organising transport/access to healthcare, setting up healthcare funds, providing additional training for local medical staff, sharing knowledge - real broad structural stuff. Hard to measure, but incredibly vital. A big part of their goal is to not only keep people alive, but to also make sure staying alive doesn't cost them everything they own. From an EA standpoint, the problem is that why is this charity doing all these things when presumably some are better than others, and it could be doing just the one thing which is the most effective use of it's donors money? This is especially important when you learn that it's really hard to beat the benchmark, which is to just give 90% of the donation to the global poor. That has an efficacy of $7,000/life saved equivalent. coffeetable fucked around with this message at 09:10 on Jun 18, 2017 |

The distance each way is like 60 miles. That's almost more expensive than renting a car and fuelling it for the weekend, and far less convienient. Trains are a sad joke these days.

That's better than what I would get, if the trip I used in my post was a one off rather than a season ticket, it would be £42.70 for a journey that is by road 37 miles each way. Keep in mind as well that I drive a 1 Series, so it's possible to bring the cost difference of car vs train down even more. It's really frustrating because the housing market problems have effectively forced a lot of people to live far from where they work forcing them to commute. Trains are so expensive (and there is the added inconvenience if you aren't close to the nearest station) that more people have opted to travel by car, contributing to the increased environmental impact. It seems that over time policies to deal with this have focused on making car travel worse as opposed to making public transport better, which just pisses people off.

I'm torn between the Tesla Model 3, the 3 series, 1 series and CLA. All seem like good rides, but with the first one still not available for test drives and the CLA is a bit cramped inside...

Air travel also saves several hours and guarantees you a seat. Air travel is misleading because there's always the cost of getting to the airport/parking. It's also much more of a hassle than just showing up and getting on a train imo

Yeah, I got into a Facebook fight after the Labour manifesto dropped with someone who kept going on about how train passenger numbers have gone up since privatisation and he refused to believe it had anything to do with the fact that it's to do with the amount of people who are having to move outside the M25 just to afford to live. Normal poo poo except for the fact that he himself was in this exact position, having been gentrified out of the nice little place he had in Hackney (from where he had a 20 minute walk to his office) to some godawful dormitory town out past Crawley. He also claims Southern would be the best-performing franchise but for those commie drivers and guards (and nationalised Network Rail doing something evil to hold them back). I have to admit I stopped paying attention at this point - how can you debate with someone who's so completely invested in dogma that they discount their own actual experiences of it's effects?
