Games aren't required to be canonical. I'm honestly kinda surprised the single player campaign is slated to be a canonical story

He's a bad guy and droids are bad guys, so same team! But... jarring.

The gameplay shown today has Rey and Han on the other side leading the clone forces.

Vos started out as an unnamed background extra in The Phantom Menace (during the scene where Sebulba attacks Jar Jar Binks), and later became a long-running protagonist of Dark Horse Comics' Star Wars: Republic series, which was published between Episodes II and III. During that time, Quinlan Vos became something of a fan favorite, and that seemed enough to earn him a space on The Clone Wars TV show (which effectively overwrote the comics continuity).
Of course, in a 22 minute show, there's only so much characterization you can cram in, so they cut about 90% of what was actually a pretty well-rounded character and settled on a few basic traits (being able to "read" objects and, yes, "not playing by the rules"). For some reason, they also turned him from moody broody guy to happy-go-lucky surfer guy. Go figure.
Dark Disciple as a multi-part TV script may have been an attempt to get a bit of the old characterization back, and on the screen the change from careless free spirit to somber dramatic character may have worked (especially given the heightened reality portrayal of the show), but on the page it doesn't.

If I remember right, back in the day, John Ostrander who created and wrote most of Vos's stuff for Dark Horse mentioned that he was almost a writer on the Clone Wars show but got turned down by Dave Filoni. I wonder what his thought on the new interpretation of Vos is.

If I remember right, the novel also has a throwaway line that kills Master Tholme off-screen prior to the events of the Clone Wars cartoon too.

Claudia Gray has a new book coming out in September. Simply titled Leia, it's marketed as a YA novel.

It seems like all the books lately have been overwhelmingly marketed to YA demographic. I feel a little silly but I miss having "adult" oriented star wars books. Hopefully the Phasma novel they are working on ends up being interesting and fleshes out the history of the first order.

Lost Stars has the most maturely written sex scene in the entire EU and new canon. They're almost universally bad across all literature, so the rare one that's actually well written stands out.

Edit: Remember that the worst of the worst is an implied sexual assault against Ben Skywalker by Tahiri.

They were Goosebumps Star Wars style right? I never read them but I read a lot of Goosebumps, so when I read a Dan Wallace interview where he reminisced about how they'd have chapters that ended "He stepped off the starship and heard a bloodcurdling scream" then the next one started "But it was only a cat or something" I knew exactly what he was talking about.

I understand Jerec from Dark Forces II was a big villain in those books.

He's in Spore which is if I remember correctly one of two books that I never read. It's no the cemetary planet one. The overarching villian of most of the books is a guy named Gog. Dash Rendar probably had the biggest role for an EU character, he was a main character in The Doomsday Ship.

Probably the darkest thing that happens is in The Brain Spiders. A serial killer who is working with Jabba gets his brain implanted in Tash's body, while Tash is stranded in a brain spider. He goes and kills an Imperial officer who'd been trying to track him down and carves a "K" into his forehead. I remember that 20 years later.

I'd consider going back to read the couple of them that I missed. They can't possibly hold up worse than YJK. "Good thing you are Young Jedi Knights, ha ha!" Said Han Solo.

In the old stuff, it's shown in the last chapter of Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader

Obi wan is in a bar on Tatooine, when a news bulletin comes up about the empire taking over kashyyyk and Vader was part of it.

It only takes place a week or so after RotS so he knows about it pretty early. I don't think it's been revealed in the new canon yet.

Yeah, Obi-Wan and Yoda already know Anakin is "Vader" by the end of ROTS (and I suppose Bail Organa does too), but I don't think they've shown any of them specifically learning about Vader's new cyborg form in any of the new canon materials.

Lost Stars. It's considered Young Adult, but it's near universally considered the best of the new canon, and feels more mature and grown up than your average Star Wars book. Also, Bloodline, which is more of a political book than pew pew Star Wars action, but it's really good. Both of these books are by Claudia Gray, so she's rocketed to the top of my "must read" list for future Star Wars books.

Beyond that you get less of a consensus, but I really enjoyed Lords of the Sith. Tarkin really isn't worth your time. The Aftermath books are love them or hate them, as a warning. Everything else in the new canon has been fine, but not very stand out.

You're not wrong. However he took part in an author's panel at Celebration this year, with Timothy Zahn, Delilah Dawson, and Christie Golden, and Wendig was the only person saving that thing from being god awful boring. I love Zahn, the man can write, but whooo boy is he boring on a panel. Wending was making jokes left and right, talking about alternate ideas on how some book would end, how Ewoks are vicious killers, etc. He was a lot of fun, so I can't hate the man.

fake edit: Oh, and how he wrote the Jar Jar section of Empire's End assuming Lucasfilm would never let him use it, so really just for fun. He said when they first started reading the section, they stopped and said, "No way." But then kept reading and by the end said, "....yeah okay, sure," and he was shocked.

I also liked that around this time last year, he accused people who disliked him of being evil for not sending all of their money to some charity for Syrian refugees or something like that. It was incredibly bizarre.
