Police confirmed that one person was pronounced dead on the scene. Also regarding the suspect quote:At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries. The driver of the van - a man aged 48 - was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident. He has been taken to hospital as a precaution, and will be taken into custody once discharged. He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course.

It's not been ruled out it was a NOAA drone in a thumbsuit.

Oh, fun. The NYT went straight for blood libel it seems. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/18/world/europe/london-britain-vehicle-collision-.html quote:The Finsbury Park Mosque opened in 1994 and became a hotbed of Islamist militants, including Zacarias Moussaoui, a Frenchman convicted of conspiring to kill Americans as part of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and Richard C. Reid, who tried to down an American jetliner in late 2001 with explosives packed in his shoes. In 2015, the mosque’s former imam, Mostafa Kamel Mostafa, was sentenced to life in prison in Federal District Court in Manhattan on 11 terrorism-related charges. As though there hadn't been major changes in the place in the last decade.

I remember it being very much a thing that low rises with common parks and brownstone style tenements work well in a number of social and community ways that high rises fail at, and crime and cohesion was one of them. Yeah, there's a book series from the 70's, from Oxford Press, by a team of authors led by Christopher Alexander. I think the relevant installment is A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction. Can't be too sure as I pulled it out of the library over a decade ago on a whim and I only remember a few things from it, but this was one of them: if you live more than about four stories up from ground you might as well be on a remote island for all the capacity of society to reach up to you and you down to it.

A bit of context a friend reminded me of for Grenfell that I thought was interesting: to this day there is no firm figure for exactly how many people were in the World Trade Centre on September 11th. The best estimate is 17,400. The last person to be counted as a casualty was only ruled to have died there in 2008. Casualty figures are not easy

Cerv posted:"loving fine" probably not. The residents group seems to have been raising fire safety issues for years that were never addressed. i think the inquiry is going to have a lot to say The concerns listed in that blog mostly relate to traffic control and access around the building, and the maintenance and upkeep of the building including emergency power supplies and clearing fire risks. The building itself wasn't especially dangerous prior to the renovations, or at least wasn't described as such.

adamantium|wang posted:https://twitter.com/CNN/status/876696831815757824 Yeah I thought that when I saw the video of the guy being arrested, there were quite a few civilians more or less holding the crowd back. Interesting bet-hedging by the senior Plod on the BBC suggesting the one death may not have been related to the attack - I remember the reports overnight were saying that the crowd the guy drove into were helping a man who had been taken ill in the mosque.

It's not a terrorist attack. Terrorist attacks are done for political aims. This is a copy cat murder and a hate crime. Tory party and press have used the word terrorist because your casual idiot will read that line in the paper and on lists of terrorist attacks this year and assume he's Muslim one lone hate filled person is not a terrorist unless they leave an actual manifesto behind, if you just get a rambling hate filled letter then they are just a murderer. Calling them terrorists can give a twisted justification to other murdercunts out there.
