I'm glad that even in the midst of a terrible tradgedy this thread can keep on as usual and find a way to argue about semantics.

In modern contexts I think "terrorism" has taken on a new meaning than just "acts that are intended to cause terror". Nowadays terrorism is violent acts by a group that is not in power in an attempt to obtain more power. There will have to be a lot more majority-on-minority attacks before the definition of "terrorism" changes in the public's eye.

Party Boat posted:Different mosque according to the Guardian's reporter on the scene I think it is that mosque or there's some serious wires crossed. My best guess is the reporter got confused because the attack targeted people after they had exited the Finnsbury Mosque, made a left turn and were down the street in front of the Muslim Welfare Center of Islington which is pretty close to another mosque in the opposite direction.

Seems the reason Corbs seems a little ragged this morning is indeed as suggested that he's been up all night - he was in Muslim Welfare House, the building near the attack, at 4 O'Clock speaking to Khan about the situation.

Its funny that Corbyn has become sorta De Facto prime minister while May hides. e: also going to chip in with the "it was terrorism" lot. terrorism is just political violence commited by non-state actors (when the state does it its counter-terrorism)

The BBC are polarising as ever. Half are attacking them for not calling a terrorist attack what it is (though in fairness Norman Smith has been drilling it home as an attack angle on May), while half are, um https://twitter.com/PFencesMusic/status/876750958772047873 E: May immediately calls it another terror attack.

HJB posted:The BBC are polarising as ever. The BBC literally didn't cover it on their news channels for hours after other channels had, their website coverage was poo poo and they were one of the last to use the word "terrorism." In fact none of the channels or coverage used the word terrorist (to the point where the people there on the site who were watching the streams of the coverage were getting upset about this) until May used the words "the police are treating this as a potential terror attack" at about 4am, and then continued to only use the words incident/potential terror attack until the met confirmed it.

There's no particular reason for May or the BBC to not call it a terrorist attack. The meme is just that typically, through inattention and structural racism, they don't. Feels like it happened with such consistency for so long that both leftists and raving fascists have ascribed a conspiracy to it.
