The life gain is part of the ability, not a separate triggered ability. It would be a little awkward to template, but it's theoretically possible to do "Whenever ~ is tapped for mana, gain 2 life" that would be able to be responded. quote:605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it meets all of the following criteria: it doesn’t have a target, it could put mana into a player’s mana pool when it resolves, and it’s not a loyalty ability.
