It feels like the cash for ash thing should be a bigger deal in the media than it is. The investigation's still ongoing, couldn't this wreck the DUP pretty bad? I mean, it has to be either blatant corruption or incredible gross negligence, there's no way something of that scale could be anything else.

Ministerial spots in NI are assigned proportionally so when they all quit the spots where due to be reallocated again after a I think it was two weeks unless they renominated a replacement, they just renominated the same people and had them quit again to retrigger the process. It was a way to game the system without collapsing stormont - with the first minister using a mechanism that let them temporarily step aside and appoint a temporary officer holder to put Arlene Foster (then Finance Minister) in place as a "gatekeeper" to make sure those uppity nationalists didn't try to go crazy and spend money

Yeah, basically the Tories are hosed if they think they can negotiate/play political games as well as the DUP. Both the main parties from Northern Ireland are masters of that poo poo on a level most of Westminster can only dream of. I consider it a serious possibility the DUP will end up dicking the Tories around so much that some backbenchers will collapse the government out of sheer frustration.

RHI has pretty much played out - the DUP counter mobilised after sinn feins successes with a "vote for us to save the union" line and blasted it out of the public consciousness by and large. Foster remaining first minister in some capacity seems to be a cert now with the most that will be asked will be a temporary leave of absence using a pre-existing mechanism until the initial findings of the inquiry are published - which will most likely focus on some DUP SPADS who have already been thrown under the bus by the party. If/when the assembly comes back Foster will probably be reelected, then temporarily appoint Simon Hamilton to stand in for her for a bit

The slow realisation that he's done for, and the only thing in his control is whose terms he goes out on, is a great scene setter for the show. The two specials and In the Loop are really good as well.

To be honest that sounds about right. That time of night, families are all in bed and asleep.

I had to ask though since the impression I had was that basically everyone in the DUP was involved with unionist paramilitaries in one way or another Foster didn't join the DUP until 2004. She started off as a member of the UUP and defected with a couple of other disgruntled members in protest to what they saw as a weak line from the UUP in regards to IRA decommissioning (which was still slowly progressing at that stage) - The DUP emerged as the largest Unionist party in the 2003 election and they jumped ship. Foster was taken under the wing of Peter Robinson, who was seen as more of a party moderniser and the man responsible for making the DUP palatable to the middle classes and business community. When she was elected leader the fact that she was the first Anglican was considered noteworthy, the party upper circle is dominated by Free Presbyterians and Foster distanced herself from the creationist hardline evangelicism that typifies the old guard

If you've bounced off it before, I'd recommend trying the specials - they don't really need the context of the first two series to be watchable, and the longer form storytelling allows them to do a richer narrative. They're also where like 90% of the lines people quote come from. Series four is consistently stellar too, but you kind of do need the specials to introduce the characters (Half the main characters in series 3/4 are introduced in the specials, which is part of what makes them watchable without the context of the first two series).

You can still do what Germany and the US did, the panels aren't banned, but they're banned on buildings taller than 20m or whatever and you have to have firebreaks.

Aluminium is considered non-flammable, legally, because it's really loving hard to actually make it burn. In that application it would have melted and fallen away from the heat long before it reached it's ignition temperature. It's the insulation between the panels that's the problem, and the evidence seems to be they used panels with flammable (or at least non-fire-retardant) insulation in them, and relied on the aluminium to protect the insulation. I'll leave the problems with that line of thinking - when the panels are installed in their millions, by the lowest bidder - to your imagination.
