Man I can't believe Matthews was nearly unanimous for the Calder. Laine deserved it basically as much.

What would have been the argument for Laine over Matthews? They were close, as they basically had the same rate stats with a games edge for Matthews to give him the lead in raw. Laine was great, but Matthews was slightly better in a similar enough way that any argument you can make for him either ends in a tie or Matthews win so I don't see how you'd vote Laine over Matthews head to head based on the seasons they had.

This is only the second time Ovechkin hasn't made an all star team in his career, although until now he was still 1 for 1 since he made it onto both teams in 2013.

Laine got hurt enough to disrupt his year compared to Matthews, had better players on his line and was a worse player away from scoring. Give him a full season and he'd have.... half a goal more than Matthews, which is nothing. The Leafs making the playoffs with Matthews as the clear best player while the Jets sputtered while getting pretty good seasons from Scheifele, Wheeler, Ehlers, Byfuglien, etc, there's nothing at all surprising about the vote.

While I'm not too heartbroken over the Oilers losing Griffin Reinhart, who would've likely been our 7th D this season at best, the only thing that sucks is the trade to acquire him looks even worse now. Two seasons of Reinhart for the 16th and 33rd overall picks in the deep 2015 draft is very atrocious, especially when the trade was already looking bad the moment it was announced.

That said, I'm hopeful that Chiarelli and company have learned their lesson and won't do a trade where they give up high draft picks for nothing again.
