I wanna sing one for the cars

And it's dark and there is nobody driving And something has got to give

Masks has nice art, but man, I would have been happier if they'd cut back on the art to find room to put the actual playbooks in the printed book. This isn't the first PbtA game I've seen to push playbooks to a web supplement, but I still don't like it.

Why are they called playbooks and not classes or roles anyway?

I presume it's based on the idea of printing out each one for play into a small folded booklet? It's AW terminology that the rest of the PbtA community has just run with.

I thought it was because they contain all the special moves (or plays) your character can do, like a sports team's playbook.

You might be right! I really think it comes down to it being a term that Vincent Baker liked, for whatever reason, and nobody else really messed with. In retrospect, Apocalypse World being a huge breakout hit as a generic engine is kind of fascinating given how very idiosyncratic and personal-feeling the original game itself is.

IIRC, Dungeon World helped get more people in it as the writting and sex moves kept people away from AW initially.

I think it was because the booklet contains everything a player needs to know and reference during play, and a way to try and break out of the "character sheet" model of representing a PC that's been standard in RPGs since OD&D.

This isn't true at all. FATE came out in 2003, for one. It's is based on FUDGE, which was even slimmer, and did originally come out in the 90s. There was even another FUDGE clone, Kobalds Ate My Baby, that was successful enough to run multiple editions and also get reused for Ninja Burger.

For comparison, while I wouldn't call it "rules-light," Luke Crane had already published Burning Wheel in print before FATE came along.

I was counting FUDGE, because Fudge and Fate are basically the same game except Fate is written much more legibly and is significantly cleaned up. If you don't count that I guess FATE is only 14 years old instead of 25 years old.

Every PbtA game I've read has had really bad art, save for Masks which alright. Like, I was gonna give Fellowship a go but that would require looking at the book and I cannot do so because it's a compilation of every art trend I hate

You're not even the first person to say this about the book but it confuses me every time. The art does exactly what I want it to do - portray a more hopeful world, and show the diversity available to each playbook. A lot of people have told me they got into the game because when they looked at the Orc art, they didn't see only green murderboys represented, but also a lava princess and a mushroom.

Its good art, and exactly what I wanted it to be.

Yeah, no. The art is good, it serves its purpose and it sets the tone of the game. This is like complaining about chrome and neon lights in a cyberpunk game.

It's flat and ugly and the proportions are weird.

Like conceptually it has a bunch of good qualities, it's diverse, it isn't titty armor every other page, it illustrates a bunch of possible interpretations of each playbook, but it could do all of that without looking like it came from DeviantArt.

For some reason, that's just a strange thing to say to me. I mean, of course it looks like something from DeviantArt. I can guarantee you all those artist had a DeviantArt account. I can guarantee you many artists in TRPGs have DeviantArts. On more than one occasion, I've looked for artists to hire using DeviantArt as one of my resources and, when I was trying to get the guy from Masks to do art for a 3rd party playbook, I checked for him (and found him) on DeviantArt. It might be a lovely, old social media site, but its where a lot of artists (including many professionals) hang out and it's place where people know to look when they need a commission.

I'm not even defending the site, it just seems like an odd complaint because, well, of course that art is from DeviantArt.

That's not Iron Man, that's Norman Osborn as the "Iron Patriot." See, Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, was president, Iron Man was a criminal and Captain America was dead because of Civil War. So, Norman stole Iron Man's suit and merged it with Captain America's persona so he can claim to be the "Iron Patriot," the new leader of the Avengers.
