Theresa May was the sole cabinet minister to block a unilateral offer to EU citizens that they could remain in Britain in the days following the referendum, according to an editorial in the London Evening Standard.

The paper, edited by former chancellor George Osborne, reports that David Cameron had prepared an offer to give EU citizens certainty in the days following the referendum result last June.

Cameron had already resigned and a leadership contest was under way in the Conservative party, but May and Osborne were still in post as chancellor and home secretary.

“Last June, in the days immediately after the referendum, David Cameron wanted to reassure EU citizens they would be allowed to stay,” the paper said. “All his cabinet agreed with that unilateral offer, except his home secretary, Mrs May, who insisted on blocking it.”

Man the previous home secretary was a real piece of poo poo.

I'm not confused. It's Theresa May using this sort of polling to indicate a majority preference for Brexit.

She's not. The Tories have been using the line that 80% of the electorate in the general election voted for Labour and the Tories and their "hardd brexit" plan. It's been used on all the shows by different talking heads today.

Also on Daily Politics, one of the Leave architects said that Johnson, Davis and Gove all still believe that the 350 mil will go the NHS.

The Met not just senior officers but the rank-and-file - have consistently resisted even being issued tasers, let alone firearms. Some of them still believe that (same way some of Blair's labour remained socalists, see The Absolute Boy), but most really feared that Corbyn would lead Labour to a huge defeat and give the Tories 5 more years with the country, and that any Labour government no matter how centrist had to be better than that. Now they've been proved wrong, they are allowing themselves to be proper leftists again.

Centrism can work as an electoral strategy but it's not an infinite victory machine. It succumbs to PASOKification. Heck I think the Tories started to see the right-wing version with UKIP starting and that's why their position is untenable as their modernisers alienate their ur-nazis and their cornerstone lot alienate the right-wing Lib Dems.

Not directly UK politics, but looks like there's going to be another war in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has issued it's ultimatum to Qatar, which it has 10 days to accept:

The demands (via user 'OhFunny' in MidEast thread):

The closure of the Turkish military base.

The shutdown of Al Jazeera and all its affiliates.

Qatar must stop funding a host of other news outlets including Arabi21 and Middle East Eye.

Qatar must refuse to naturalize citizens from the four countries and expel those currently in Qatar.

Qatar must hand over all individuals who are wanted by those four countries for terrorism; stop funding any extremist entities that are designated as terrorist groups by the U.S.; and provide detailed information about opposition figures that Qatar has funded, ostensibly in Saudi Arabia and the other nations.

Qatar align itself politically, economically and otherwise with the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Qatar must shut down diplomatic posts in Iran, kick out from Qatar any members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, and only conduct trade and commerce with Iran that complies with U.S. sanctions.

If Qatar agrees to comply, the list asserts that it will be audited once a month for the first year, and then once per quarter in the second year after it takes effect. For the following 10 years, Qatar would be monitored annually for compliance.
