Glastonbury costs more than it used to but you don't need to be rich to go, it's absolutely worth the money for the value you get, take your own booze and drugs and you don't spend that much there. I used to get in for free by working there as campsite crew.

Local schools provide volunteers who get free ticket and the schools get donations from Eavis.

Glastonbury was and is a good thing you bitter old man.

Is it possible to imagine a state funded music festival with nominal ticket prices and subsidies food and drink?

One that's accessible to the many, not just the few?

Has this ever been tried anywhere else?

23 euros for 3 days.

food and drink is pretty reasonable, each region of the communist party has their own area where they have regional foods and drinks.

goes up to 35 in august or something.

but it's nowhere near glastonbury in scale, like the whole festival would probably fit into the pyramid stage field.

it's hard to get across just how big and diverse glastonbury is, it's essentially a city.

for the duration of the festival Glastonbury (well Pilton) is the most populated place in Somerset.

It's good that this is being looked into (and I hope the council that paid for fireproof cladding and got Fire Metal raises a shitstorm), but I hope it doesn't end up being an excuse the gentrify/decant tower blocks. Once the families are evacuated it must look awfully tempting to slap a big ol' "CONDEMNED" sign on the door.

the thing with glasto is if you dont have someone who can get you in on a work ticket or a backstage ticket ur doing it wrong.

plenty of my friends are performing there as well.

one year I got in with the help of Brother Ray.

someone I know was going to get in with this guy, so we rock up to Pilton (this is after the fence went up so impossible to break in) and wait for brother way.

Shirtless bumkin turns up in a dirty battered old 4x4, we get in, pay him a hundred quid and he drives into the site, gives us a passout wrist band and we go in with his little helper mate.

3 of us walk in with his mate or son or whatever he was and once we're in the site we give the wristband back and he goes out to do it again.

That idea is just begging for the right wing press to poo poo all over it. Champagne socialist druggies wasting other people's money on something completely frivolous. It's all the bad stereotypes of socialism rolled into one.

I mean, it might be a nice idea, particularly if it focuses on small-time acts that wouldn't get exposure otherwise and allowed poorer people to enjoy something they usually wouldn't, but the papers would have a field day. Maybe do it after socialism takes firm hold of this country ;)
