They seem to be the worst of the state based Labor governments. Continuing the coal path as if they were the LNP, giving zero fucks about the reef. Have they overturned any of the previous LNP governments cuts like to women's health services?

Re: Gonski and the Catholic funding brouhahah, can anyone tell me why the state funds private schools at all? Or any private enterprise, like subsidies to coal miners? What's the idea behind that?

back in the 60s or 70s catholic schools threatened to close down and send all their pupils to public schools, overloading the system, unless the government gave them money. so now they have money.

It's a bit like universal basic education funds. Every kid deserves some funding no matter which school they go to, but it has been getting out of proportion because the religious schools whine harder.
|
# ? Jun 24, 2017 01:38 |
|
Also the religious schools don't get the money directly- it's given to the Catholic Education (Corporation?) and then "assigned". Aka the rich schools get more money because reasons. I suspect they are unhappy because the parents at then poor schools are going to start asking questions on where is the money actually going.

I don't know about now, but certainly in Keating's time there were massive numbers of Catholic working class folk in the ALP leadership. Now the catholics are well represented in the liberal party room too, so funding for Catholic schools was probably as close to a bipartisan position as you get. Until now apparently.

Actually it raises the question of why the CEOs bothered renting an empty carpark when they could've just walked out the office door, or got the council to evict the homeless when they could've just shat out a window
