I haven't looked into it, but purely statistically, which one of these seems more likely?

a) The same guy who uncovered evidence of really serious wrongdoing on the part of a darling of the Democratic party just happens to be chair of the Vermont Trump campaign.
b) The chair of the Vermont Trump campaign decided to poo poo on the Democrats, and there was just enough mud in the water for an "ongoing investigation" roughly as serious as the investigation into Hillary's emails to start.

The fact that they've hired lawyers doesn't really mean anything, by the way, however much we like to poo poo on Trump's lawyer needing a lawyer and so on.

It's less cowardice than miscalculation. Shouting from the rooftops that Russia is undermining our democracy has the effect of undermining confidence in our democracy, which Obama knew was a major Russian goal. In the October 2016 world where Clinton is a lock to win, you can try to minimize harm by not publicizing the interference--we're just all living with the downside risk. He was wrong, but not necessarily because he was afraid.

Probably B. It sounds like both Mrs. Sanders and the Burlington financial board are equally at fault for possibly misinterpreting future donor gifts and student enrollment projections. So buying those properties and being unable to make it profitable for the college ended up contributing to the demise of the college. A lot of small colleges are starting to go belly up due to the lack of substantial endowments to keep them operating.

Basically this. People see America and how corrupt it is. Corruption is on purpose. It's a tool of power to satisfy key constituencies and individuals. Anywhere that large amounts of money accumulates you're going to find people who either want access to it or to demolish it completely to really get access to it.

An example in the US is social security. It's actually well funded and will continue to be well funded for at least the next ten years. However among my generation (millennials) and a good amount of the gen-x'ers there's this idea that we'll never see it so we should just demolish it. Even if there's a shortfall we can still run it at 75% instead of burn it all down. But the common wisdom is that it should all be burned down because we'll never see it. The weakness in the system is exploited and people who want to privatize it come along. The accumulated wealth of generations would be up for grabs and if people invest poorly they'd be destitute instead of just on a fixed income.

Serious warning. Be careful of getting your healthcare defunded. Don't be us. Corporations will turbofuck you.

Ironically, they are using millennial culture to turn the next generation into what they wanted millennials to be: rabid defenders of the establishment that waffles between propping up corporate interests and keeping minorities in their places. It's insidious as hell.
