Just showed corbyn's speech at Glastonbury to my parents. Dad voted non Tory first time in his life last election and my mum had always had green sympathies.

They were both bowled over. I think, and hope, that this is genuinely a speech that will go down in history. It was so good. :unsmith:

The amount of squealing on social media about BUT ARMED FORCES DAY! suggests it's rattled the gently caress out of a lot of people who are having to bite down extra hard on their cognitive dissonance.

To be fair AFAIK its just a nose-thumbing towards people who used it to insult him (I think?) before the election results. A sort of Daft Punk scenario.

Speaking of, is the UKMT thread that was going on after the first leadership election archived? I recall some pretty amusing arguments over people freaking out over opinion polls 2 years out from the election.

Old white men tend to lap this narrative up. Was lectured by several in the pub last night how UNBELIEVABLE! UNBELIEVABLE! JUST UNBELIEVABLE! the level of bias in favour of Jeremy Corbyn was on the BBC.

Their eyes glazed over when I reminded them about Kuessenberg's deliberate misrepresentation and how she encouraged shadow cabinet members to resign in order to harm Corbyn. They also declined to name any of the 'hundreds' of 'top economists' that they claimed had 'proved the Labour manifesto was unaffordable nonsense'.

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.

Hard as it is to imagine another politician going on stage at Glastonbury, it's harder still to imagine a politician going on stage and not doing some contrived appealing to the youth nonsense.

X-post from fire thread:

New York Times

quote:

In a brochure aimed at customers in other European countries, the company [Arconic, formerly Alcoa] cautions that the polyethylene Reynobond should not be used in buildings taller than 10 meters, or about 33 feet, consistent with regulations in the United States and elsewhere. “Fire is a key issue when it comes to buildings,” the brochure explains. “Especially when it comes to facades and roofs, the fire can spread extremely rapidly.”

A diagram shows flames leaping up the side of a building. “As soon as the building is higher than the firefighters’ ladders, it has to be conceived with an incombustible material,” a caption says.

But the marketing materials on Arconic’s British website are opaque on the issue.

“Q: When do I need Fire Retardant (FR) versus Polyethylene (PR) Reynobond? The answer to this, in part, depends on local building codes. Please contact your Area Sales Manager for more information,” reads a question-and-answer section.

But wait! There's more!

quote:

Two years later, in 2013, a coroner questioned Mr. Martin about the application of building regulations in the case of another London fire, which killed six people and injured 15 others at a public housing complex called Lakanal House. Mr. Martin defended the existing regulations, including the lack of a requirement for meaningful fire resistance in the paneling on the outside of an apartment tower.

A questioner told him that the public might be “horrified” to learn that the rules permitted the use of paneling that could spread flames up the side of a building in as little as four-and-a-half minutes. “I can’t predict what the public would think,” Mr. Martin replied, “but that is the situation.”

Moving to a requirement that the exterior of a building be “noncombustible,” Mr. Martin said, “limits your choice of materials quite significantly.”

Presumably this is because nobody has ever & will never call Pissflaps the Absolute Boy, unlike Jeremy Corbyn who is in the dictionary as the definition of Absolute Boy?

I liked that he raised this point generally; we get told that history just trends towards being good for everyone a lot. It's very rare it's acknowledge that goodness is fought for, every step of the way.

The cops were preparing for that military thing all this week; first I knew about it was seeing them going around all the street furniture outside the building I currently work in and putting security seal stickers on anything that could possibly be opened. Nothing like a healthy dose of paranoia to start the week...
