If you are saying some such scenario definitely cannot happen, then it is not immmoral to give orders for retaliation as they will definitely never be read.

Small-scale nuclear weapons like Trident either do nothing but deter, or take the world from a scenario where a man successfully used nuclear weapons to one where a dead man failed at his political goals. Neither is immoral; cost-effective is a different matter.

So I've just finished reading Flat Earth News and Hack Attack (can anyone recommend a replacement for my soon to be cancelled Sky subscription?) and it makes eye opening reading about what a cancer on democracy Rupert Murdoch and News Corp are.

Just about to start The Establishment by Owen Jones, are there any similar books out there?

Yes, I view Trident as utterly pointless and can't fathom any orders you could give in the letters of last resort that aren't either immoral or irrelevant. Of course if you assume there's even an infinitesimal chance of the letter being opened then you should not consider it an amoral document.

Back in reality though; It's a waste of resources, and has a political, ethical, and moral cost for sending out the wrong message to our own population and the rest of the world.

I hate to point this out to you but if someone nuked a place, they have successfully use nuclear weapons. Any ensuing retaliatory strikes do not make that use of nuclear weapons less successful but they do add even more successful uses of nuclear weapons to the pile.

I don't know what ethical calculus you're using where one place being nuked is worse than multiple places getting nuked but I think there might be something wrong with it.

You appear to literally be arguing that the worst thing about someone using nuclear weapons is that the people who live in the country that used them might not die in the process.

Now I'm wondering where I'd build my inner refuge and if we have enough food to survive 14 days. Also realising that it would be pointless anyway. drat.

My main hope would be that relative proximity to Cheltenham and Fairford would mean a swift death.

Couple of weeks ago I ended up having a talk with friends that ended up on the end of the world & I ended up Googling bomb shelters/insane underground bunkers. How about a bunker with room for 50 people, a really large greenhouse, a swimming pool, a bowling alley, a cinema & a Batcave style hidden tunnel for your cars to go in & out? I also came to the conclusion that in the case the world didn't end in a rain of nuclear missiles, it'd be a great chance for me to catch up on the book backlog I've built up.

Anyway, it's a fun road to go down. Though I'm not sure about how safe these builds actually are as far as avoiding radiation, didn't look like it would be lined with lead.

Good news! With modern nuclear weapons, none of those shelters will actually survive being in the blast zone and death is certain.

Ya it owns. The overpressure wave will kill you anyway if you are at ground zero and even if you are a bit further away you need to have a pretty loving sophisticated shelter with blast valves for it to not be a very expensive oven for you and your family

then if you do survive, you have to get out of an irradiated hellscape though the more efficient bombs are not so bad on the fallout. really the best option is to open your arms to the incandescent nuclear fire and be reduced to ash instantly

You must think cats are loving stupid. Cats make sure their movement doesn't ring the bell. Or at least mine did.

Our cats generally only killed rabbits and mice and would bring them back to us though, so they've been good cats.
