El Gallinero Gros posted:I can't speak for anybody else, but I feel like if you have the ability to score 15-20 goals once, you can do it again. Taking a flyer on the kid with the hope he can be a 2nd or 3rd line quality forward when he's shown that ability in the past isn't too crazy. I agree him living up to his pre-draft hype isn't happening, though. But I'd be excited if Calgary offered him a deal. The Yak we saw last year will never be a 20 goal scorer in the NHL unless he's getting first line and first PP minutes and playing with elite players ala what you might call the Pascal Dupuis experience.

Dupuis at least brought good two-way play to the table to go along with being a body Sid could bank pucks in off of. The Yakster isn't good even at that currently.

I think I'd be totally happy with re-signing Smith (DAS collectively takes a horrified gasp) as long as the contract isn't too dumb. He was pretty much a perfect 2nd pairing guy with Skjei last year. Shattenkirk? Maybe if they have some plan to move Staal to free up that space the it wouldn't be too bad to have them all signed there, but otherwise like I said that's a lot of money tied up in defense and Skjei is up for a new contract after this season as well. I would be much more happy with some kind of defensive configuration that had Holden as the 3rd pair left D and one of the guys they signed playing the right side (Bereglazov, Pionk, etc)

It is not surprising at all that Alzner is being linked to almost every Canadian team. Canadian media loves that type of player, and so do most Canadian NHL GMs.

He was pretty much a perfect 2nd pairing guy with Skjei last year. the problem with that is that we have no idea if either bereglazov or pionk can be a competent nhl defenseman yet. ditto graves if you wanna throw him in there too. also deangelo's sample size was small last year but his shot suppression was about as low as it can possibly be. you need to shelter him, at least for now, and not give him second pair minutes. i agree that we should get rid of staal and his contract, but realistically don't you think that would have happened already if it was going to happen at all?

a false posted:the problem with that is that we have no idea if either bereglazov or pionk can be a competent nhl defenseman yet. ditto graves if you wanna throw him in there too. I think you gotta sink or swim a little bit at this point if you're the Rangers. They've got a lot of guys who could be competing for spots and I don't think the answer to it is to spend a huge amount of money on free agents instead. Realistically Holden is still on this team and he's still a roster spot right D for now, so we're probably not actually looking to fill 3 RD spots with D'Angelo, Pionk, Bereglazov and maybe UFA's. e: regarding Staal, it's still early in the offseason and people are still looking for players. Staal might end up being a consolation prize for a team that didn't get Alzner, Emelin, Sbisa, etc (oh my god hahaha) I'm not sure the Rangers actually want to trade him though

McDonagh-Shattenkirk Skjei-Smith Holden-Deangelo and then all the guys with no NHL experience. It's not that hard, assuming that 20m in cap space is awaiting Shattenkirk.

Matt Zerella posted:He's really really bad OP. He...well, I dunno, he can flash some pretty good periods of play but he's also pretty drat slow these days and his depth perception has affected his ability to move the puck. His stickwork and gap work is probably still good if he's not having to defend a guy flying at him full speed. If you pair him up with a guy who can move the puck well he'd probably be decent. Pairing him with Holden was bad bad bad bad last year.
