This kind of thinking led the Leafs to trade Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft.

To be fair to the Leafs, the Raycroft's good season was only before the lockout. Yak's last good season was all the way back in 2012-13. That shine has worn off.

You just have to ignore that Raycroft put up a historically awful save percentage in 05-06.

Whoever gives him that Jeff Finger+ money is gonna feel real smart until he is actually playing hockey after the first half season of that contract.

Reading this it dawns on me that as unlikely as it may Ben that this will actually occur, the penguins could legitimately have 3 elite players that will play their entire career in Pittsburgh. Crosby I locked up until like 2025, and I think letang and Malkin are both signed unto 2022. They will all be at possible retirement age at the end of their contracts too.

If Ovechkin had been limited to the current 8 year max when he signed his current 13 year extension he would have been a free agent after the 2015-2016 season in which he scored 50 goals. Would've been interesting to see what happened this past season.

$15 million is the current single player max based on 20% of the $75 mil cap.

So Chiarelli's only move thus far has been trading Eberle for Strome, which is a downgrade in RW. Otherwise he's going to go into the season with almost the exact same roster as last year and approximately $9 mil in cap space after Draisaitl signs his new contract. Sekera is still hurt, there's no replacement for him other than going "okay just let Nurse/Benning play on the 2nd pair and hope for the best". The Oilers lack of scoring depth still hasn't been addressed, in fact it's been hurt by trading Eberle for a lesser player. And rather than using any cap space they're just going to let it go to waste, even though this is the last year of McDavid's ELC and they could easily fit in a couple of pieces on one year deals. Not to mention that last year was a case of everything that could have gone right did (right up until the Ducks series), and you're literally banking on that happening yet again.

This is going to end in one of two ways. The Oilers stay healthy, McDavid has the greatest season ever and they win the Stanley Cup, or they miss the playoffs. No matter what happens, fire Chiarelli.

Crosby's deal was for 12 years, and it was expected that his cap hit as a percentage of the salary cap would go down significantly over time.

That shouldn't be overlooked - the same cap hit on an 8 year deal is worse than what Crosby or OV signed.

tofes posted:

Maybe, probably? He was healthy scratched in the KHL playoffs last year, but he bounced back to a big degree this year (though he didn't score in the playoffs this year either).
