Nobody said Vince was a bad on-screen character, just his decision in controlling on-screen talent is questionable at best. Dude messed up Bayley and Zayn in less than a year, then keeps trying to push Roman when nobody's buying it.

See also Sami Zayn, American Alpha, Enzo and Cass, all the cruiser weights, etc. Raw and Smackdown are the big leagues you see and people will never get over without scripted promos and paint by numbers matches, and 50/50 booking.

Character that's basically female Cena doesn't have a clean singles win on the main roster in like 7 months, gets the title handed to her by her friend, really only has one major clean successful defense of it at Mania in a multi match, then gets made to look like a schmuck in her first major defense feud and promptly loses it in her hometown THEN gets destroyed in the rematch where she refuses to go  .That's like the complete opposite way to book someone to get over with their intended demographic, or ANY wrestling demo really.

Vince clearly isn't an idiot, but age and success and being pretty much the only (big) game in town has seen him rest on his laurels/not feel challenged or driven to shake things up or try new things. I'm pretty sure it's in Foley's first book that Vince had a moment sometime after Pillman's death where he realized time may have passed him by and actively encouraged everybody to bring him ideas/changes for their characters. They threw a bunch of poo poo at the wall in desperation because WCW was eating them alive, and while there was a lot of rubbish in there some of it really struck a chord, headlined by Steve Austin being incredible and Vince finding new life as an amazing heel. But that was 20 years ago and they're largely just been repeating in diluted form a lot of the same basic storylines (the Authority in particular) and it does feel like time for another overhaul. That's unlikely to happen within the next year or two based on the ever increasing TV revenues they got as part of their deal on USA (an incredible deal that people were disappointed by since WWE actively promised it would be even better) and there's a lot still to like in WWE, but it does feel pretty creatively stagnant over all. That's not Vince being an idiot, that's just Vince being lazy/resistant to change. Edit: And I agree that if they successfully manage to trap Vince in a giant steel box at the core of the Earth, HHH and Stephanie are likely to either just act as Vince 2.0 models or look at offloading the company to some giant media corp like Disney.

Sami, American Alpha, and whatever the other "main roster ruined them" go-tos everyone has are mostly still entertaining. They're booked badly, but they didn't suddenly become brain damaged sloppy botchers who can't wrestle as well as Stephen Amell, TV's Green Arrow. (Not Enzo and Cass obviously since they always sucked, but the others.)
