It's a shame that bronies tainted this franchise so so terribly, because this looks like a fun little kids movie and the animation is pretty good. But there's inevitably gonna be showings of this movie with actual children where creepy weirdos are going to show up.

Haven't the bronies gotten bored by now, like the Homestucks and the Sherlocks?

It's for posting on Facebook and social media ads, they play a section of it to catch your eye while the sound is muted, in the hopes that you'll go "Oh, neat" and unmute the ad to watch the whole thing with sound.

I admit I don't delve into the darkest places of the internet but I haven't heard jack and poo poo about the show in ages. The loud annoying fanbase at the moment is Steven Universe from what I've seen which at very least seems a step up.

Heard from a Brony friend that adult fan interest started dying after the creator left, because the show started pivoting towards the adult fanbase, which put them off. Which, if true, would be really hilarious, because once the show actually started being for more than just little girls, they stopped caring about it.

I think we should call the Avengers.

I think Lauren Faust left the show after the first season, so if your friend is right, that was a very short infatuation.

Yeah, I actually like Steven Universe but even the thread here was really bizarrely terrible for a long time until it got a little less popular, or the real terrible posters just went to tumblr or some place more appropriate.

The show is explicitly a woke show with progressive themes but I feel like they do things right and encourage people to listen to viewpoints they don't agree with and find common humanity instead of holding a moral superiority, and there's a lot in the show about how to balance the ideas of growing as a person and accepting yourself even if you are "defective". One episode they explain what DBT meditation is in a song.

So I've liked that this show has the audacity to have an agenda like that and still tries to be entertaining. I can't blame people for being afraid of the fans for being pushy and obsessive, but the damage is done I guess.

I dug the Pony show for the first two seasons, still kinda liked the third and fourth, and never got around to watching the seasons afterward. I'm sure the movie'll be fine, but at the same time, I just can't see myself paying to go see it in theaters. At least with watching the show, I would be watching it at home in private... Probably will just wait for Redbox.

I did like how a teaser trailer for it played before Your Name. I can't tell if the advertising was completely misaimed or aimed perfectly.

Macaluso posted:

It's so when the trailer shows up as an ad on YouTube, they'll have already made their sales pitch in the five seconds it takes for the "Skip Ad" button to activate, with the full trailer playing thereafter for people still interested in seeing more of it. Definitely seen that with other film trailers on YouTube.

The pony trailer was alright but bronies completely soured the show for me. Not because of "cringe" or whatever but because a good chunk of them were (or are) actively terrible people dedicated to doxxing and death threats.

I feel like I gave My Little Pony a fair chance, despite reservations. Watched three episodes. I feel like I'd be happy with my daughter watching it, if I had one, but it really didn't grab me at all. Plus, the voices were like bandsaws in my brain, especially the dumb pink one.

Meh, I've long since learned to ignore the fanbases when it comes to appreciating the works they're fans of. I mean, I'm a Sonic fan for cryin' out loud1, we all know how that fanbase can be.

On a less Pony-related subject, apparently it's the ten year anniversary of Ratatouille, which for many is the best Pixar movie out there, whereas for me I barely remember anything about it. About as much as I remember Brave, though I'd say Ratatouille was easily the better film between the two. (I haven't even watched The Good Dinosaur or Cars 3, so I can't get away with saying they're the Pixar films I remember the least about...)

1Though since the game quality shot way down after Adventure 2, there was a long stint where I had to genuinely wonder why - at least Mania's gonna be ace.

I think at the beginning it was a really cute reboot of a show that a lot of people from my generation enjoyed in our youth, and I support it on that basis, however I am incensed that lovely guys took it away from girls because holy poo poo what, they can't even have My Little Pony? It's a piece of JUNK!
Ratatouille is the Miyazaki-est Pixar movie. It's incredibly low-stakes, barely has a villain, and devotes half its screen time to awesome-looking food. I don't know if it's my favorite Pixar movie, but there's something refreshingly pure about it. It doesn't feel like it got messed around with in the writers' room. Not too many cooks in the kitchen, as it were.

I mean, we're at the point where men are so obnoxiously loud and angry about women-only anything that they can get it shut down, such as that one girl-only gaming meetup in Spain that had to be cancelled because men were endlessly spewing verbal diarrhea over it.

At least that women-only Wonder Women showing went ahead as scheduled, in spite of the manbabies wailing and gnashing their teeth over it.

The character designs for MLP are pretty cute if nothing else. Compared to the toys I grew up with where they looked like hydrocephalic ducks, at least.

Ratatouille is like the third-lowest performing Pixar movie ever, which is a shame because it's a great movie.

Also now that I've had pet rats for several years the animation is downright stunning in how well it captures their little movements and mannerisms while still anthropomorphising them so strongly.

Now I'm somewhat curious how those rankings go.

I imagine Finding Dory is #1 in that list, if only because it topped Zootopia which is Disney's #2 best-selling Animated Canon film (behind Frozen), though that's admittedly a bit of an assumption on my part.

:( That is so sad, I would be like super interested in going to a women only gaming con, considering that is rare for me to find another woman willing to talk about games outside the internet. I'm a bit sick of the whole "gaming is for booooyyyzzz only" mentality.

And jumping in to the honey pot about MLP, the show was good...for little girls. I dropped the show after like 5 episodes because it was extremely boring and simple (for me, an adult woman), and then came the bronies and me finding pony porn on every image search that had nothing to do with ponies. So ugh. UGH. Yes, fanbases can be creepy and weird. I also wonder which, I suppose, upset goon brony bought me my avatar

vv Edit: Yes, exactly. I dunno why some fans kept trying to find "deepness" in a show that didn't have any deep.

My introduction to MLP was seeing a bunch of avatars on this site. I thought maybe it was like Flapjack or Adventure Time, whose humor I really enjoyed. The Animaniacs-style humor of my childhood was back in vogue and this might be another run at it. So I watched the first episode.
Nope. Little kid show. Really little kid show. Done in Flash.
Seven years later and I still don't understand.

Yeah, I never really got the appeal of the show myself. I suppose it's fine for little kids and at least looks better than the 80's cartoon did (though that's not exactly a high bar to clear) but I still don't understand how it managed to become the phenomenon that it did (especially among adult males).

it was about the same with me. Like I still keep up with Transformers, surely this is just the same kind of 80's nostalgia thing only with something less masculine, I thought the fans would just be women who collected the figures and watched with their kids or something.

Just weird that all these dudes not only liked it but told everyone else they did, at every opportunity, and it's still going on. I had to say nothing and cringe while a student was telling my phd advisor, on and on, about how great MLP was, like three years ago.
