The first thing I did in Deus Ex Human Revolution was turn off the waypoint and I got lost for two hours on the first level because I kept going through every door in every hallway

I like to look through the entire hallway (or street, or whatever the connecting area is) first to make sure I won't run into a patrol on my way out of the side-rooms, beforehand. Then after that, I'll typically go through each of the doors/side-areas first, before proceeding further. (And if one of the side-areas turns out to be the main path, I'll typically double-back to explore the rest, before continuing)

I have OCD when it comes to checking every single corner and games like Arkham Knight give me conniption fits because it's not physically possible with how the map is designed.
