Doing anything online other than talking about completely non-political matters with friends/family using your real name is a loving bad idea. My wife tried to ask for help with an issue we were having with a snake on facebook and it resulted in us having animal control show up at our door.

CNN is entirely within their rights to publish the dude's identity but they decided not to at his request where so many alt right shitheads are reading this as a threat just exposes the sheer panic they feel at the idea that they could face irl consequences for spamming reddit with lovely hate speech
