Mmm, a lot of stuff is post-WW2, thanks partly to :hitler:.

American house construction is still very strange to me in many places, timber framing is very uncommon here. It seems very cheap and lacking durability, though I appreciate a lot of it isn't necessarily the cheapest-possible method used in the average a McMansion.

There is a lot of post WW2 stuff but also not everyone is living in a thatched cottage. As for wood frames it is becoming more popular with new builds where they throw the frame up and just have a brick facade. A few new build places I rented in the past were like it and crap in comparison to something brick all the way through.

Nice! The condos that are one bridge out, and then when you get out by the Harris Teeter have exorbitant HOA's. I think you're right though, if you have a stand-alone on the island, there aren't HOA's. We're actually looking at a development called Meridian that's up closer to the James County Park, still only like 10 min to Folly, 15 to Charleston.

Ohhhhh. Yeah, I about choked when I saw the fees for the condos. I know where you're talking about. Wouldn't take long for those fees to add up to house payments on a stand alone on Folly itself. ;)

I'm really glad my cruise control works at 30 mph, the Folly police are often bored and camp the speed change at the bridge.

Disagree, save it if you can. meatpimp, you're on the right track with the capacitors idea, but yeah that does look like a mess. It's probably a power supply capacitor, which looks like those big blue ones. It shouldn't be too hard to replace them, or even pull them one at a time to test them, but I understand not wanting to dive into that spaghetti mess.

It's entirely possible that it could be the caps on the board, in fact the end of the one at the bottom of the board looks like it might be blowing out? Hard to tell from that picture.

It can't hurt to replace them, but I wouldn't count on it solving the problem. Then again, I'm not some wise old radio sage, so take my advice with a huge grain of salt.

All pre integrated circuit electronics are super easy to diagnose. You really just need your eyes, nose and a multimeter. Maybe an oscilloscope in the very rare case. Once chips started showing up, then things get much more difficult.

poo poo like this is why, if you have to live in an HOA community (and sometimes it can be very difficult to avoid in some areas), then you should take the few hours per month needed to be actively involved in the HOA or even get on the board, so that the HOA doesn't turn into a group of old grouchy retired people who love to have power over everyone's lives.

If the majority of a community is middle-aged working class, then the board should represent that, and not be the 7 old retired guys out of a community of 500 homes.

Sadly, 95% of people are too apathetic and lazy to bother.

Or too busy. Once those 7 retired guys get on the board, they tend to do stuff like move the meetings to 2pm Thursdays and start trying to change the rules for electing the board.

My HOA has 408 homes. We have reduced the board to 3 because we can't get anyone willing to serve even after explaining that it is one meeting every other month (2 hours max) and the rest via email. We get anywhere from 0 to 10 homeowners showing up for a meeting. We hold the meetings on a Wednesday night at 7pm to make sure anyone that wants to attend has plenty of time to get there.

Because of the complete apathy of the homeowners, we can't actually change any rules in order to get rid of the rules that people commonly show up to complain about, because it takes a LOT of homeowners to change the rules (this is set by state law). We can change simple stuff like architectural guidelines, and we can tell the management company not to enforce 'rule x', but we can't actually change anything, so we spend a lot of time listening to a few old people bitch about their neighbor parking their work truck (pickup with a company logo on it) in the driveway, because it's against the rules. We can't actually change the rules to allow the 100+ 'work vehicles' that park in the community to be allowed to do so, because none of those people will show up.

We also get like 3 or 4 people who want us to enforce the no overnight parking on the street (the streets are owned by the city, so iffy on enforcing that anyway), and don't care that everyone in the community would have to pay an extra 10 bucks per month to pay for that enforcement. So if it wasn't for me and the other two guys who all hate being on the board, but do it to keep the board from becoming those guys, I'm sure my HOA would be hellish to deal with.

I spent 4+ years fighting to get the rear end in a top hat retired guys off the board, and now I'm stuck because since nobody is getting harassed by the HOA, nobody can be bothered to care enough to show up. If I left, they would have to fill the vacancy with the grouches who show up to the meeting, and the slide into terrible HOA would begin again, so I know firsthand how HOAs get like that, and it is completely the fault of the members of the HOA who can't be assed to give up an hour or two every other month to at least show up to the meetings. The grouches won't volunteer to be on the board now, because they know they would lose all the votes 3:2 (with a 5 person board), but as soon as the current board became 2, they would be jumping in to 'help' by volunteering.

I hope that I'm the first one to move out of the community so I don't have to deal with it.

If you have a "project" car that you really have because it kind of fell into your lap, but you're honestly not that bothered about, it's probably better to sell it on rather than wrangle with your ambivalence and keep buying bits for it to try and kindle some interest, isn't it?

Tbh I'd almost certainly end up well in profit by selling the car and accumulated bits.

It's a Ford Sportka with an apparently blown headgasket.

I was going to try and build a comedy monster hot hatch on the cheap, aquiring bits like a Focus 2.0 front cut, forged pistons, big turbo etc, but I've come to the conclusion that I can't really be arsed. Partly because I've ended up with other stuff that's more interesting to me, partly because I can't find a cheap way to sort out the engine management and fuelling.

How much work to just drop the 2.0 in and sell?

Also does it have the compulsory fuel filler rust?

E: just to be clear I don't want it

InitialDave
Jun 14, 2007

I Want To Believe.
Actually, surprising lack of rust. It's a pretty good one.

Physically getting the 2.0 in there would likely be easy enough, though I'd either need a different flywheel for the Ka gearbox, or custom driveshafts to use the MTX75 (which was the original plan).

But making it run could be entertaining, as it turns out the later Ka uses a Siemens ECU, not a generic Ford 104 pin EEC-V jobbie. It seems less plug and play than older ones.

Not insurmountable, but again, I basically can't be bothered when I'd rather be messing about with other stuff.

Also, I'd probably get more money selling the Ka with the sickly engine and the Focus front cut (or parts thereof) separately. The prospective project was largely a product of getting the Ka and bits really cheap.

Edit: Nevermind. I don't have time to track down a bunch of random failures on decades-old equipment. Where's this coming from? Well, I had my Mirage subwoofer, circa 1993 start making some nasty poo poo noises. I threw a couple main caps at that to see what it would do... nothing.
