Rumor going around is Daniel Craig resigned for the next Bond flick which is due for release late 2018. I wonder how much it cost them since he said something to the effect that he'd rather kill himself than play Bond again?

Spectre was actively pissing me off with Craig putting in the lowest-effort "action scene" possible at the end. It was like watching someone play Counterstrike, but worse.

Parker County (Texas) Peach Festival was this past Saturday. Came home with a bushel of peaches that will become peach preserves. Only spent a couple of hour at the festival itself, because 90-something degrees F, humid, and way too many people in too small a place standing in too long line to buy overpriced stuff. So, you know, like any fair or festival. Got to visit my folks, too. I forgot to post that the last time I visited, dad gave me a Hobart Handler 135 that he had rescued and fixed. that made me happy. It's slight years beyond the crackerbox Harbor Freight fluxcore-only welder I got (which did what I needed it to do fro all of $82, so no complaints.) I've only used the Hobart with fluxcore so far, since I need to source and fill a gas bottle, and they're not inexpensive if you want to own. For as little as I currently weld, there's absolutely no way I'm going to rent. Dad also offerred this to me for he and I to repair and restore: I'm stoked about that! It's small enough to fit in my garage, and just a cursory Google shows it to be a very popular machine that was made for many years. And the 9A has all the bells and whistles, like threading. I've already grabbed service manuals, user manuals and training videos from the net for it. Best part is some of these manuals go back to the '10s, but they made the machines up to the '80s! I'll have to get the serial number and such to figure out when mine was made. It's been stored outside, so there will be a lot of Evaporust and/or electrolytic de-rusting involved. possibly a few parts, but nothing major is missing or broken. Now I just need a little mill.

The quick cuts/editing was not doing it for me so I gave up and haven't tried rewatching it. And can you blame Craig for being tired by the end? Bond movies all go on about 20% longer than they need to. No, damnit, you do not need three false endings.

I tried watching Spectre and 45 minutes in neither me nor my wife had any idea who the gently caress any of the 60 or so people dressed in black was or what anything had to do with anything else, nor why anyone would care. I generously conceded that maybe we'd been puzzled because we hadn't seen Skyfall and everything was set up in that so we tried watching that and realized that we'd already seen it and immediately forgotten everything about it because Daniel Craig is extremely boring as Bond. bring back Remington Steele I say.

Why would I be getting decent results on internet speed tests, but have pages just time out and not load? Did reset the modem/router, cleared browser cache. Could it be the browser or laptop causing this? It's old and borrowed (windows vista, current Firefox), but that doesn't really make sense to me. And it's just stuff like forums and Facebook. I've been watching Netflix and stuff via my phone and Chromecast no problem.

Then check what your DNS is set to, and set it direct to 8.8.8.8 (google public DNS) rather than the router or ISP server it is likely set to at the moment to see if that helps

Well I was looking for a new ride, and we were hemming and hawing about getting a truck given that we live a little more in the sticks now than a few years back. Saw a '11 F150 with only 59k on it for a decent price and bought it. Good load out option-wise, towing package, color-matched bed cap. First truck though. Gonna take some getting used to.

So an old "friend" of mine I ditched back in the 90's because he was a fake shady rear end in a top hat just got arrested for defrauding a bunch of people for over 200k, and I'm having a really hard time not being all about it because my brother still hung out with him and didn't get what my problem was with him. Charges are Scheme to Defraud, Grand Theft, and Theft from persons 65 years of age or older, guess that means he'll be going away for awhile? Oh and he's a single father with sole custody. I always knew he was a piece of poo poo.

We have something for defrauding old people, but not just stealing from them. We do have elder abuse. That is basically hurting anyone over 65. This is fun when both parties are over 65 and can even apply to cases where someone who is say 70 hurts a 65 year old. Also, some people over 65 don't love that they're being treated as if they are old. Also a fun fact for elder abuse in california: quote:(3) If, in the commission of an offense described in paragraph (1), the defendant proximately causes the death of the victim, the defendant shall receive an additional term in the state prison as follows:

Seems like a bit of an odd thing lobbied into place by a bunch of 65 year olds. I'd have thought something like "theft from vulnerable people or those in care" would cover the apparent intent more effectively.

InitialDave posted:Seems like a bit of an odd thing lobbied into place by a bunch of 65 year olds. It's mostly because some legislator's father got robbed or something. making it simple >65 means that you don't have to prove the person was vulnerable or whatever, which is a really hard term to define (and would make the trial 3x as long as we'd basically have 2 days of medical testimony for an otherwise simple case). I understand why they did it that way, but it gets kind of absurd in practice.

It's one of those risks of unintended consequences I guess. Generally, I'm of the opinion that specifically directing the wording of laws toward any one group of people - whether nominally to try and protect them, or to try and get them for something - isn't the best idea.
