So is Girltalk ever actually going to do something else? Something not like that last rap stuff? Is there anyone really making mashup albums like back in the day? Is the whole thing kinda dead? Sucks :/ mashup albums were such bitchin workout albums.

BrainDance posted:So is Girltalk ever actually going to do something else? Something not like that last rap stuff? This may not be your style and they are mixes instead of albums, but others in the thread have said it scratches that mashup itch since there aren't many people putting out that stuff anymore. This is the Big Bootie Mix Series by the DJ/producer duo Two Friends and there are 11 1-hour mixes at this time and they generally add another every few months. They take a lot of house/electro instrumentals and then mash them up with other instrumentals and vocals from a wide range of genres. Vocals can be old, new, poppy, emo, rap, and everything in between and they have a TON of energy. I think they make great workout albums so hopefully this gives you some material! https://soundcloud.com/twofriendsmixes5

Rad, just a little into one mix but so far so good. Thanks. Why did mashups die? Is it just because I'm getting old and my music tastes are old man tastes, and now the kids are into something else that I just don't understand? Why? Mashups are so cool!

BrainDance posted:Why did mashups die? They didn't, you just have to look really hard now. The days of Girl Talk and Super Mash Bros. are over, but up until recently Yacht Club DJs were releasing really good albums pretty regularly, and Bruneaux is still going strong (and working on a new album now). This is only two years old: https://soundcloud.com/bruneaux/sets/bruneaux-the-art-of-noise Later Babes are also still kind of around.

There's no way to easily monetize mashups rn. Apple et al have bought out the companies that could handle the web of royalties you'd need to pay out for an album like Feed The Animals, but they're just sitting on it for some reason (probably money and label pressure).

Are there any good mash-up playlists on Spotify? Every time I search for mashups I find a bunch of poo poo I don't want, like a "pop mashup" playlist that is just a bunch of pop songs. Or someone takes all of the songs from a mashup and makes a playlist out of them. I don't want that!

Honestly, there isn't a track I don't like. There are some I like less than others, but if he picked my bottom 10 and made those full tracks, they'd still be fantastic. I shouldn't have cut the Introduction though. The "Blame it on the a a a a a alcohol. Blame it on the a a a a a a alcohol" sync is *amazing*. That needs to be my ringtone Fuckin' Alabama is probably going to be the lead vote getter, right? It fires on all cylinders. I will say that after a while the format gets predictable. Music from track A, vocals from track B, vocals from track C, additional beats, vocals from track A (maybe D if there is a 4th track) I assume that is just so he could give the best sample of what the mashup would be, and that the final tracks will be less formulaic. Though Titus Jones has a general formula that works so so well. But, to be fair, most producers do too. I can pretty easily distinguish TJ from Mashup Germany from Schmolli from Earworm from DjsFromMars from Skouteris. Speaking of.... its nearing the end of the year which means yayayayayaya end of year compilation mashups are coming soon God I gotta get back to Bootie.

Track 36 was the only one I marked definitely not. Alabama was a sure hit, assuming it stays that well matched. Honestly I would’ve been fine with some A+B mashups of some of the stuff in there (and a bit more if it works well), but I could’ve done without, say, the weekend included in track 3. But I totally get the formula and sticking with what works. You gotta stick with Bootie if for no other reason than they’re the only ones that I know of still releasing regular best-of compilations. That’s why I miss MUYB so much. All the other sites that were sort of hubs for that stuff are long gone. Some of the EOY megamashes are worth waiting for (Skouteris has taken the crown from Earworm, IMO) but there’s also a ton that aren’t so great. I’d really prefer to get more EOY best-of packs, honestly. And I also want to download those 2 friends mixes for my long drives fuckin SoundCloud

E: God, I remember chopping up old Loo & Placido NRJ megamixes to have individual tracks. Still have the tracks but I think the mixes were eaten somewhere along the way.
