Yeah, we'll just ignore all the problematic implications of claiming that Africa's problems are "civilizational" coming from the country that had Sankara assassinated, and which still maintains Francafrique.

Previous plans for African development were also carried out with local leaders who proved to be compradors working in the interests of European & International resource interests. There's zero reason to believe that President Neoliberal has any interest in overturning the neocolonial relations with African countries.

The horrible thing with Francafrique is that it's a lot like the Washington Consensus, it would probably take a seriously sharp turn left to get rid of it for good.

Gaddafi's currency plan was goofy and wouldn't have panned out. There were a hundred other reasons France had to get rid of him, though.

This thread increasingly convinces me that Macron is the right man to lead France.

Yes, centrism, famously the solution to fascism.

Remind me what was the name of the party that formed the governing coalition that propelled Hitler to power?

Actually, reading that, the imperative that the plan must use public-private partnerships is the most hilarious part.

"It's kind of hypocritical to expect developing nations to not pollute as much as we did in the course of development.

Also it's really important that they not use nationalized industries like we did, or worse, to recreate the rapid development of socialist nations which was so dramatic that it shook confidence in capitalism in the mid- 20th Century."

Regardless of this whole Africa thing, Macron is very explicitly opposed to labor and very bad as a result (unless you happen to be a conservative or libertarian or something yourself).

Like, at least American liberals manage to hide behind pro-labor sounding rhetoric, but Macron is very upfront about what a shithead he is.

I get the impression your logic here doesn't really go beyond "leftists think this guy is bad, so I bet he's actually good!"

edit: wait, weren't you the guy who thought Theresa May was good and had "the proper demeanor of a leader" or something?

I dunno if its leftists but certainly "the kind of people who read some dumb poo poo on twitter then get all agitated about it."

Anyway Macron beat all the alternatives pretty handily and saved France from the vichy. Proving the valuable and reassuring lesson that wild swings to opposite political extremes aren't required to stop the far right in its tracks.

He also went from marrying his high school teacher to creating his own political party and becoming president of France, all in his youth. He's obviously a very smart dude and has something going for him.

Theresa May does look absolutely magnificent. She is a very handsome woman and its a shame she's on the wrong team / sucks at politics.

he makes no mention of people like the catholic church telling peeps that contraception is bad, or the terrible loans that keep african countries poor and dependent, or the mining companies that extract wealth but give nothing back in local revenue to the states they're stationed in, it's just 'well the infrastructure, institutions and education is bad and terrible, how did that happen? tis a mystery'

the summary of the speech is 'africa is a continent of trafficking, drugs and violence, and all of these problems are causative of political dysfunction, not symptomatic', which is as close to racism as you can say while still being a centrist - but it's still a rhetorical shift, that places the blame away from contemporary forms of exploitation onto the people in africa themselves

the only reason he's saying 'well we can't just give them money' is because there's too much money riding on the terrible loans to african states, to even considering forgiving them/discharging them, even though that's exactly what needs to happen to help them.
