Idahoant posted:I think maybe people are just burned out on the Transformers movies, you can only sit through so many overlong, deafening, muddled films before you start to just dread them. Did you see this movie? I love bad movies, and enjoy the other four transformers for what they are mainly because of this thread, but the last Knight is aggressively bad. Like if you think it's just stagnation for why it's not doing as well, and you've seen the movie, I have to guess you have no actually gauge of quality when it comes to film. The last Knight is suicide squad level of nonsensical editing, which is ironic, because it's SS gathering scene is better than "Ayer's" lovely take.

bushisms.txt posted:Did you see this movie? I haven't. I saw the first three in the theater but now I'm in wait for TV mode. AoE, and really all of the sequels, have been dreadful slogs for me, to some degree. But I really can't get excited for a movie after AoE. I think a lot of people feel the same going by the box office. I have no doubt that Bay is an incredibly talented director, but I suspect he is more interested in staging spectacular set pieces than in constructing engaging films or film series. And he can stage a spectacular set piece better than anyone (except George Miller). I think the writers are letting him down and I have grown to dislike the way the movies discard the human (and robot) characters. I don't exactly miss Sam, or Mikaela, or Sam's parents, or Carly, or Tessa, or Shane, or Joshua Joyce, but I don't like Cade Yaeger much either and I think continuity can help a movie series remain engaging.

If it does well enough internationally, they might just keep churning them out with a reduced budget and more focus on the international market. I do sort of think that all these films feel like they don't even know where they want to take the franchise. I'm sort of certain that if the first few GI Joe and Transformers films had been in development AFTER Avengers came out, we'd be seeing a much different push for a shared universe right from the start with the films, probably MASK thrown in there, too.

Like I said, crazy film but fails to deliver on the pulse-pounding spectacle that these films are known for. What's surprising about this film, to me, is how heavily the marketing was leaning on phrases like 'The Final Chapter" and "See How It All Ends" when this film is maybe the one Transformers film that is most obviously set up for a sequel.

A smaller scale movie with a smaller cast and focus should help tremendously.

CG still needs a lot of massaging to fit in with live-action if you don't want it to look like Jumanji, and that costs money. There's also probably a factor that, as the tools have gotten more widespread, there's more info on what works and what doesn't, and so they learn how to use those tools better.

I've always wondered what it would have been like had Michael Bay and Stephen Sommers swapped directing roles on Transformers and G.I. Joe. Sommers is the big creature effects guy, having helmed stuff like The Mummy and the 1994 Jungle Book. And G.I. Joe would have given Bay the largest canvas possible on which to paint his military porn. It almost feels like each director was better suited to the opposite franchise.

Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.
