Can this one count as OSHA because it's footage from a policeman on the job? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B8CE18KWXk Bike cop on-board camera. About 2 minutes in he starts chasing another motorcycle, apparently for speeding. Watch as the most unbelievably dangerous police chase ensues. The fugitive is going triple-digit speeds through dense residential zones, riding against traffic and splitting between cars...and the cop follows right behind him for twenty minutes. It's that the police department allows it and that nobody dies. Major pants-making GBS threads moments around 4:00, 6:20, 10:30 but the whole thing is insane.

You get to used to it, the reason it's difficult is that you don't understand the jargon. (It's similar to learning a foreign language - if you're just learning, and someone is speaking too fast for you, you're likely to understand none of it at all). Once you understand the jargon well enough, everything in the video becomes a sentence with a well-defined meaning instead of just a bag of words, and it's much easier to comprehend. It sounds like they lined up with the right-most set of lights (as you'd normally do if you were landing on 28 R), not realizing that 28 L was down for repairs and didn't have the lights on. So 28 R was actually the left-most set of lights, and the right-most set of lights was the taxiway.

misguided rage posted:I can't make heads or tails of it, can you elaborate? It seems like something the landing aircraft should have noticed, but then they did say that something seemed wrong and were waved ahead by the tower. The landing aircraft absolutely should have noticed that they weren't aimed for the runway. The tower said land on the runway before and after the question. The tower had no way of understanding that the aircraft wasn't aimed at the runway. NOTAMs are NOtices To AirMen. And tell you about changes to conditions and any new restrictions at particular locations. Like "One of the runways are closed." The pilot should have read that and thought through how the airport is going to look different than it normally does.

Maybe procedures will be changed to make this sort of misunderstanding less likely, but the pilots are definitely to blame here.

It was the landing pilots fault 95%. It is their responsibility to read the NOTAM and account for it during their planning. They fell into their routine. Intentional landing on taxi ways are done like in Auckland airport years back because they were upgrading the single runway for the airbus 380. That said after reading parts of that NOTAM it's crazy how loving long that thing is with a dozen cranes most of which were being over zealously reported. People are going to start zoning out. They might as well increase their plate update period instead. But it was somewhat unusual for the airport not to light the disused runway because of this as it would be marked with a visible X in the day time to avoid this.
|
# ? Jul 15, 2017 06:48 |

It does seem like putting a big illuminated X on the runway, to match the daytime markings, would be a good idea -- but taxiway lights are blue and runway lights are white. You don't land on the thing with blue lights. Plus, SFO has approach lights built out into the water in front of both runways, but obviously not in line with the taxiway. There's no excuse for that one. e: I can't find a picture of the SFO 28R nighttime approach view, but here is what it looks like in X-Plane, which is renowned for its accurate nighttime lighting: (yes, flight sim spergs, i know i'm too high) the intended runway is the giant glowing thing with the line in the water pointing back towards the camera. The taxiway they nearly landed on is the faint green line that I've put in the center of the screen. Here is what it looks like with 28L inactive and the lights turned off (sloppily photoshopped out) Again, uhhhhhhhh Sagebrush fucked around with this message at 07:50 on Jul 15, 2017 |
