Well decided to roll through the Balkans and can still tell you this: Eastern Europe is still loving awesome. The Balkans are almost there. Just a little too expensive. And it is somehow harder to break the girls... Also, Croatia does really remind me of a huge Lake district (national park in the UK). Thst is not a bad thing in my book.

Kadyrov doesn't believe gays are considered people. quote:In an interview, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov denies reports that gay men are being detained and tortured in the Russian republic — not because such abuses would not be allowed, but because he thinks there are no gay men in Chechnya.

I think Canada should take in all Chechen gays, let's work something out so they aren't sent to death camps. Justin would be very much against it though so that's non-stater.

The three main Lithuanian political parties - Conservatives, Peasant union and Social Democrats are virtually identical. They all consist of socially conservative incredibly corrupt "old guard" and trendy socially liberal young people. Their economic policies are differ in rhetoric but in reality are "we get to control the money flows and fail to reform anything we promise to". I think it's the result of an enormous amount of working age people emigrating/ignoring politics and leaving the country dominated by pensioneers. Nothing as bad as Poland thankfully, our conservatives are the German christian democrat type and not too Jesusy. Lots of them (notably former PM Kubilius) are openly pro-abortion. Speaking of Russia, I can not get over how some tankies became genuine fans of Russia, the country that thinks that unrestrained capitalism is too modern and is trying to get back to feudalism. I saw one guy saying in the Trump thread that Russia has universal healthcare that Americans would love to have. For the record, this is how hospitals in Russia outside of Moscow/St Pete look like (pics taken in 2014-2016 and it is getting worse): http://uglich-jj.livejournal.com/102608.html

Right, which is why it is alarming when any person who associates with the left buddies up with Russia or repeats their narrative (Jill Stein or Corbyn being two examples that come to mind)

That's "consequence" rather than "goal". Concentrating wealth and power in an ever-shrinking number of hands is the goal of capitalism; the destruction of everything that makes life tolerable or even just sustainable is just a side-effect.

Just found this thread trying to find the appropriate place to gush about how great the bellingcat MH17 analysis is. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-europe/2017/07/17/mh17-open-source-investigation-three-years-later/ https://www.bellingcat.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/mh17-3rd-anniversary-report.pdf I'm sure it's old news to the people reading this thread; but the pdf is seriously mind-blowing to me on several levels, including but not limited to: * being able to pinpoint the exact section of field the missile was launched from * the comprehensive tracking of the movements of that BUK * the identification of the battalion and so many of its members

We're currently talking to a university about training AIs to search social networks for soldiers, then start pulling out details about them, like unit, rank etc. They think it wouldn't be terribly hard to do. It could mean what it took 2 people over a year to do with the MH17 case could be done in hours and applied to any military which has soldiers who use social media.

The thing with soldiers is they have uniforms, they're friends with other soldiers in their same unit, they're generally proud and open about being in the open.
