Mental health is only a barrier from firearms if you've slipped enough to draw attention and be sent to a ward by a judge or willingly check yourself in to one. They can't go looking at your medical records for anything anyhow because of HIPAA, a background check isn't going to tell anyone if you're seeing a psychiatrist or on meds from one. Just like the "do you use illegal drugs" question, you can't really prove someone's crazy unless the cops and a judge have been involved.

I thought the now repealed mental health ban required far more than "got shipped off to the bin for a few weeks". Like, the court had to strip away your right to govern your own finances and you had to have a legal guardian to kick in the buyer ban. I could be wrong though.

I didn't realize there were any changes, but being adjudicated mentally deficient puts it on your public record. Being thrown in a crazy wing of a hospital probably varies, if there's a police report involved, and you're eventually convicted of something that makes it relevant to public record that you were in a nut house, it will probably come up in a background check. If you just checked yourself in on your own will, and didn't hit a point where the state gets involved, they'll never know unless you tell them.

The VA was declaring people mentally incompetent and adding them to the FBI database so they'd be barred from owning firearms if you gave them any indication whatsoever that you were unable to manage your own finances or if you had blackouts. My understanding is that getting your rights back after that was extremely difficult and you had to fight it through the VA bureaucracy, not the courts. They are trying to push a bill to make it so the VA can't try to declare people incompetent without a judge deciding the person is a danger to themselves or others first.
