idiot posted:

I had saved up for quite a while and I didn't have anything that I wanted to spend my money on until a week ago. I decided to buy some figures and 230+ volumes of manga. The problem is that my parents don't know and I'm not sure how they will react when I tell them. My mom always nags me about how much I spend on "poo poo", even though I haven't bought anything over 20$ for the past 6 months. They don't even know that I'm into manga and anime so they will probably be suprised. I'm afraid that they will say that it's for kids and yell at me for buying "useless" things. So how do I tell them that I spent 1700 dollars on figures and manga when they probably will get extremely mad (considering the amount of money).
I'm 17 btw.
Edit 1: Some people have asumed that the money came from my parents which is not the case. The money is from birthdays/christmas (1500$) and part-time jobs (200$) so they are mine to spend on whatever I want.
Edit 2: I've noticed that alot of you think that I should have saved it for something better but the thing is that I don't want anything. I don't have anything that I would like to spend money on and due to that I've been able to save up that amount of money. I haven't gone out with friends to the cinemas or for food etc (although we have been doing other things that don't require money) because I don't find that it's worth the money. Well I guess the point is that this is the only thing I find even remotely fun enough to wanna spend money on, so I don't really need money for anything other than this. The "Save up your money for something "big" doesn't apply much to me because there isn't anything "else" or "big" although I can agree that it was a bit too much :).
Edit 3: Details about the purchases. I gave 750$ for the 230 manga volumes and 950$ for the figures.

I honestly can't get upset about this post since I know similarly-aged people who spend inordinate amounts of money on shoes or watches just so they can "keep up with the Joneses." At least OP will get long-standing value from the manga, never really understood the appeal of figures though.

Hell, it's basically cutting out the middleman given you're expected to move interstate at a moment's notice to find the few remaining jobs, nobody can afford to raise a family anyway and you don't have to deal with landlords or HOAs. (Unless trailer parks have some equivalent, which would be hilarious) I'm half considering it myself at some point in the future.

hailthefish
Oct 24, 2010

Trailer parks usually involve the park itself owning the land, which the residents lease to put their trailers on, so it can definitely be similar to a HOA.

Nope. I am fine with it. Assuming his other affairs are in order, i.e. able to pay for college and such.

I wouldn't spend it on anime though, but that is just me.

Anime is BWM and BWL because in the end, it's just basic crap stories written for teenagers with no nuance or depth of real literature.

Yep. This is what stopped me from getting a trailer myself. You still pay $1,500-2,000 a month in land rent plus all the same requirements / restrictions exist that you'd get living in an apartment, except now when you're evicted to build luxury condos, you have to find a way to relocate / store your trailer too.

Yes, bay area trailer park land rent seriously runs that much.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

Pff, you're not supposed to rent a spot for your trailer like a regular fly-over state plebe, you're supposed to park it in the lot of the McDonalds down the street from your job and blog about 'disrupting the traditional paradigm of home mobility'.

Like that google guy who was living in the office parking lot.

I would count Grave of the Fireflies as "real literature" as far as movies are concerned.

There are apparently some tech employees who buy a Leaf or something and then live in the company parking lot, tethered to the charging station. Maybe it works better if the company has the whole "free food all day long" thing.

Wake up with the Kin-OH GOD WHAT IS THAT?!
what the gently caress there's like seven different ongoing arguments (one about anime) and no fresh bwm content

sounds about right

E: ahh loving new page, okay well here's a brief BWM story: my friend who got fired from his call center gig has officially registered a business with the irs. I got a text the other morning saying just this:

"I'm going to be a business owner friday or maybe monday."

From what I gather, his fiance does quite profesh video editing while he does the music (it's not good) and the art (it's really bad, like bored high schooler without any proper training bad). Anyways, they have an attorney on retainer, are looking to "cover their asses legally," and they seem to be really focused on setting a "foundation," whatever the gently caress that means.

You can guess how many clients they currently have. And no, his fiance's mom does not count. Also the super profesh attorney they hired forgot to tell them that they need commercial licenses for every bit of software that they use if they want to be legally covered

Dude. Just get a loving job like the rest of us.

(I also run an LLC on the side and can use the pretentious, up-my-own-rear end label of business goober owner, which is why I have an idea of wtf I'm talking about but that is another story for another thread)
