I just read the Wikipedia summaries of Ready Player One and Armada and I'm at a loss as to how these can be serious, unironic pieces of literature. They read like Lonely Island sketches. Like, I can't not imagine Armada starring Andy Samberg dressed in an undersized kid's Halloween astronaut costume and the aliens giving him a big novelty trophy at the end.

people have talked about the 'references as constant nerd pandering' aspect of these books enough but man, reading a passage like that written by a dude who consumed all those things growing up really comes off as this sad desperate hope that future generations will still care about the media he consumed because choice in consumption is the only thing left to define himself through can't even hope for people to remember your own good deeds in life, just that they'll remember the good deeds other people did that you were around to see

I agree that it's very fun to mock the novel, but it's transformation into this performative, memetic phenomenon is also ridiculous. Groovelord Neato posted:this coming from the guy tearing apart a terrible fantasy series. Both of these episodes were amazing and made me realize that I should probably slap everyone who told me RP1 was good. I'm going to read it because I'm a masochist who will read garbage for the possibility of it being entertaining. This is why I read the first "Five Nights at Freddy's" novel and "Michelle Remembers", neither of which was very entertaining or good for that matter. To bring it back to movie, the trailer for RP1 was exactly the kind of nerd masturbatory bullshit that I've come to loathe, and while I saw plenty of breathless "OH MY GOD FREDDY KRUGER IS IN THIS!" posts when the trailer dropped, the whole thing just left me hollow. I won't see this in the theater because gently caress giving this thing theater money, but I might check it out after it hits VOD, although I don't know if my eyes can handle the strain from the amount of rolling I'm anticipating. ALFbrot posted:https://mobile.twitter.com/donniemnemonic/status/889215615717605376 And that is probably the best reason for why I might not actually read this garbage fire of a book, because at first glance I thought "Oh, that looks like acknowledgements" and then I read about a quarter of it and felt the urge to hunt down Cline and beat him up for his lunch money. Also I'm pretty sure he was in that documentary about digging up the ET Atari cartridges, and he shows up in a loving Delorean with a life size ET in the passenger seat. Kill the nerds is what I'm saying.

The sad thing is that nostalgia for that period also gave us "Regular Show" and big chunks of "Rick and Morty" It didn't have to be bad. It's that old maxim that, when it comes to references, it's not where you start, it's where you take it.

Ugggh, they've announced yet another sequel in the Gerard Butler Olympus Has Fallen series. This one is titled "Angel Has Fallen" and terrorists attack Air Force One in order to get at Gerard Butler. Considering he's foiled two major terrorist attacks you'd think they would want to avoid him at this point.

muscles like this! posted:I've never watched it but isn't London Has Fallen super racist? That's what reviews said at least. It's an extremely accurate depiction of a racist world view that refuses to learn anything. It starts with an errant drone strike at a wedding creating a villain. It ends with a drone strike on an area that has been evacuated of civilians, but when the film shows the street level view, civilians are visibly walking around, no one having learnt anything. The heroes are carboard cutouts who talk like a 13 year old punched up their dialogue to make it more badass, while the villains calmly illustrate their points. When it comes time for Morgan Freeman to deliver a verbal smackdown, he just awkwardly pauses. He's also always shot staring into the camera, even when he's in a casual conversation. The best part is when Butler is 'interrogating' a terrorist, and it cuts to a wide shot, and it's just a crazy person stabbing a dead guy while yelling questions at him. The scene immediately before hand is two older men summoning the courage to drive down a street filled with young ethnic men. The scene immediately after includes Butler enthusiastically shooting an unarmed man in a wheel chair before screaming that the US will be around for a thousand years. London Has Fallen is amazing.
