The cgi in the matrix movies for everything except humans is absolutely phenomenal and looks great today. The scene where neo and trinity fly the hover craft into the squid bomb artillery is gorgeous. The squid attack on zion is likewise great. But man did the full cgi burly brawl scenes suck. I remember groaning in the theater when that poo poo started

Rough Lobster posted:Anyone watch Ozark on Netflix? I'm only two episodes in and it's a lot darker than I was expecting. Still has funny bits, but does it ever lighten up (and is it worth finishing)? I'm on episode 10, and no, while it still has funny bits, they don't lighten up. Ozark is a great show.

I'm still convinced that the only reason the Matrix was good and the sequels weren't is because they bought the first script and created the other two. Nothing the Wachowskis have done since has been as well-written as the Matrix. Not that the Matrix is Citizen Kane or anything, but it's very clearly the pinnacle of a Wachowskis movie. Since then It's all been jumbled garbage over pretty scenery.

Jupiter Ascending was, but only because iirc the original script was like 800 pages long and they had to hack it to pieces to get the drat thing made and in theaters. If they'd kept it near its original length and done a film series, I think it would be a decent amount better received.

Jupiter Ascending was wonderfully entertaining even if it was a complete mess. Speed Racer is their best movie though, and Sense8 in a lot of ways is like they revisited parts of the Matrix movies that didn't work and made them work by playing to their strengths more.

Sense8 was clearly made by people who just really love humanity and the human experience and huge chunks of the show are just them cinematically gushing about how great human beings are. It's charming, and it works whereas in the Matrix any time they try to do that it has to overcome all the grime and despair of the setting -- not that those are bad things, but rather they weren't quite proficient enough to make the extreme contrast work. It feels fake, or at least strained, while in Sense8 it seems totally sincere.

The title sequence shows two buff dudes with mohawks licking an ice cream cone together and like, that one shot tells you all you need to know about whether you'll enjoy the show or not.

I noticed a movie called Check Point up on Netflix with a blurb about a homeless vet and a cook stopping a terror plot on US soil involving a secret civil war era tunnel that travels apparently scores if not hundreds of miles, to the white house - also they take over a battleship for some completely bizarre logic a la underpants gnomes business strategy. It sounded amazingly stupid so i watched it, and loved it. It has terrible acting, really awful fight scenes, claims to be based on a true story, has hamfisted use of music, bad special effects in firefights, a mostly incomprehensible plot, and William Forsythe and Fred Williamson claiming to be in their mid 40s. Most of the cast seem to be wrestlers or something, a little girl calls in the military st one point, and at the end they literally stand the US flag back upright like goddamned Iwo Jima. A must watch. coyo7e fucked around with this message at 08:32 on Aug 1, 2017 |

The fact that they have ice cream in their beards that really squicks me out and I have to look away each time. Yet I enjoy the show.

The first season was stronger than the second in this respect, but the childbirth scene matched with the opera/classical music performance is a good example of this. Just a celebration of humanity's emotional tapestry that's played completely straight.

She seems okay for having Kevin Smith as a father. edit: Also, Cop Out is as bad as everyone's saying. It doesn't make sense, but it's nowhere near as messy as Red State, Tusk, or (I presume) Yoga Hosers (I refuse to watch Kevin Smith movies). I don't think Cop Out's as bad as Zack & Miri, which I couldn't finish. That movie fails at even creating the tone of a comedy.
