Just makes people that I would not want to associate with easier to spot.

Man, getting ghosted on for a second-round interview is weird. Phone interview went great, they were enthusiastic about getting me in for a face-to-face, told them I couldn't make it in until today, then... nothing.

Everything with this company has been a last-minute ordeal, though. I'll bet somebody calls me around mid afternoon to see if I can bend some time and space to make it in before quitting time.

I attempted Arabic a few semesters ago (but eventually withdrew from it because gently caress that I'll just take Spanish) and had a guy who was in the marines in there with me. I think I've brought him up before.

He began just about every sentence with "when I was in the corps..."

When he asked me I said "because a foreign language is required for me to graduate."

He was also loud as gently caress when he spoke.

I don't know how it works with US ISPs but in Canada if you call your ISP and threaten to cancel and go to a competitor's service, they'll usually reinstate your discount for six months.

Comcast usually does that too but it involves dealing with Comcast customer support so it really is a question of how much you think your time is worth.

if i get the discount for another year that's $300 i'll be saving. so i'm basically paying myself $300 to call them (if it works), which is worth the time. even if it is just for six months, that's $150. that's two electric bills.

Does anybody here use an HTC 10 that might be able to give me a quick review, namely how well the camera works? I'm torn between getting a 10 or an S7. Going on 40 minutes with this phone call. I have an old modem on my account that I used for a short time. She said she has to remove it before she can extend my service discount.

She removed the modem I'm currently using lol

BUT I'm getting upgraded to a higher speed for free because I am going to have to eat a $10/mo charge to lease the modem.

Fair trade I suppose. I may invest in my own modem soon but it'll take a while for that to pay itself off.

So instead of coming out $300 ahead I'm coming out $180 ahead if you don't factor in the upcharge for giving me faster service.

That's two light bills and a water bill!

You know there's nothing wrong with your existing modem, right? Anyone who says they "need" to upgrade your modem is full of poo poo and pushing an extra charge on you. Your ISP really just wants to keep everyone on the same hardware so they don't have to support multiple devices.

The modem I bought didn't have enough range to reach upstairs. I don't live in a mansion. I live in your average town house. It was just that bad of a modem (and I should have read reviews on it before buying it because mine wasn't defective, it was just a bad make and model). So I went back to their modem because I was past the return deadline for mine and didn't feel like forking over another $120+.

If you are looking for top the line consumer cable modems: https://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-ARRIS-SURFboard-SB8200-DOCSIS/dp/B01N6SKK1G/

Or if you don't need the latest standard: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6190-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B016PE1X5K/

You can also typically find used versions for significantly cheaper if you so desire.

Both are probably way better than whatever lovely modem/router combo comcast is leasing you. I don't know if it is still the current practice, but most of their old leased modems included a wifi router built in that allowed other people to connect to the internet through your connection. The claim was that it wouldn't affect your connection speed or local network security, but I personally wouldn't trust Comcast with that.

Upgrading the modem actually is important for good internet speeds. There are still quite a few modems running around on the very old DOCSIS 2.0 standard which won't let you get the maximum speed off modern cable connections. If your modem is DOCSIS 3.0 you should still be good for awhile thanks to the lovely internet infrastructure in this country. DOCSIS 3.1 is the current standard with significant improvements over the last, but it is only needed if you have more than 1.2 Gbit/s down and 200 Mbit/s up.

The other consideration is that since they are combining wifi routers and cable modems into one unit, the Wifi standard needs to be updated periodically too. You'll probably want 802.11ac for current home wifi applications.

If it's Comcast do not not not at all ever use their loving modems. That Xfinity poo poo is piggy backing on your network to give them free coverage and capacity. Even if it had 100% physically isolated hardware I'd still be bugging the gently caress out about security implications but it'll be a cold day in hell before I believe those cheap fuckers would pay extra for that.

As far as I'm concerned any network with a router running Xfinity is compromised from the ground up and you're paying for the privilege. gently caress anything Comcast says to the contrary, they don't give a rotting rat's rear end about you or your security.

I'll probably get that second one. Right now all of my money is going into a car in late September/early October so I'm not spending on anything I don't have to. That's why I'm so neurotic about an 81 cent increase in my internet bill.

I don't really use my internet for more than Netflix and I've never had issues with it so if someone is leeching my connection I can tolerate it for now.

DOCSIS 3.0 has been around for more than a decade. If someone has been living under a rock for so long that they're still using the same modem from that long ago... then they're probably just fine staying under that rock. They probably still use an AOL email address.

Seconding the recommendation for the Surfboard line of modems. They may as well be considered the standard.

Hi there, would you like to try some spicy products?
There's a cable-based ISP in Germany that runs this massive-coverage Wifi service for metropolitan centers where, if you're a customer, you basically have free WiFi in the majority of downtown areas in places like Frankfurt, Cologne, Berlin, etc.

I never understood how the company achieved such seamless coverage as I'd heard several of my friends rant about, so I asked if they just place loving stupid amounts of high-capacity/high-range routers all over the place. I was enlightened that there was a moderate amount of routers/repeaters, but the bulk of the coverage was carried by company owned routers in private homes.

So I asked how that works, does the company just ask someone to dump another router in their home? "No, no, that's the fascinating part, it's the same router you use that the company supplies you with, that comes with pre-configured public channels/access"

Me: :stare:

You're saying complete randos on the street use your wifi for free because they're customers of the same company?

Them: "No, no, it never affects the performance of your own internet connection, it only makes available idle capacity."

Me: "...idle capacity of my personal internet connection?"

Them: "No, no, it runs over entirely separate channels set up for this collaborative coverage that are different from your personal connection?"

Me: "Channels that run through the same cable in my wall?"

Them: "Well..."

Me: "Accessed through the router sitting in my room, that uses an internet connection legally registered to my name?"

Them: "You're being so negative about this, dude."

I threw some hypothetical scenarios at them in the discussion, and they claim it was all totally safe because of separate encryption, no "physical connection" between a guy on the street surfing, and my own surfing, different legal entities, "zero responsibility" of mine and whatnot, but it boiled down to a random passerby on the street being able to access my wifi to pirate poo poo/download childporn/commit fraud over my personal connection from a completely anonymous device, simply because they may have access to the login information of another customer.

A counter-argument was "Duh, anyone can do that over free wifi anyway", and my only answer was "I'M NOT A loving PUBLIC BUSINESS THAT OFFERS FREE WIFI".
