it's almost like there ought to be a standard, outside of their electability, by which a politician's stances and actions could be judged to be sufficiently aligned with the party so that any embarrassing defections could be held to a minimum, thereby saving resources that would be ultimately squandered getting them into office. it wouldn't have to be stringent, just a floor by which a supported candidate could be sufficiently liberal. what would you call such a thing? a... cleanliness exam? a stainlessness trial?
