I Might Be Adam posted:So I'm only spending probably half of the day on Thursday and all of Friday at Gencon. I'm going with friends I haven't seen in years so we are planning on playing games together in the library but I haven't bought tickets for anything else. Is there really a reason to at this point? Even weeks ago, I noticed most of the events (dnd/pathfinder) were full on the days I'm gonna be there. I'm sure that hanging out with friends, looking at the convention and doing night time drinking/socializing will be ample but is there anything that I SHOULD do? I'm in a similar boat with more time. If you all like RPGs get some generics and go to Games on Demand, that's what I'm planning, along with getting lots of demos in the dealer hall. Unless someone wants to give me their L5R ticket...

Hey fellow Gen-Conners! I work at Sun King Brewery, who makes the Gen-Con beer every year. Checking in to see if anybody travelling from the coasts would be interested in doing a beer swap. PM me if so, otherwise I'll see you all on the floor!

How is the paid game library? If you have a couple solo hours to kill is there a better option for finding pickup games with strangers?

SirPhoebos posted:What advice do you have for Pricing? I've only been doing this for a few years, so I'm no authority. But my usual process is to go to eBay and search for what I'm trying to sell with the filter "Show only: sold listings." What people are selling it for isn't nearly as worthwhile to as knowing what they're buying it for. I then sometimes check Amazon or Noble Knight Games usually just to make sure I'm not overshooting the current price of the item overtly (including about $4 for S&H in that estimation). I'll usually set the top price around what the top end of what people are buying it for and the low price based on the low end. Of course, sometimes this can vary a lot or you can't get accurate pricing data and you just have to eyeball it and guess. Bear in mind sometimes you just have to do fire sale prices - it's how I got rid of a lot of my d20 stuff. But even then, that added up to a lot more money than I expected. With high-value items it can be tricky, it took me two years to sell off my rarer Wraith books. Just because something is technically valuable doesn't mean anybody will buy it for that price, but the auction is good for at least giving those sorts of items a shot at collecting the market value. Worst case scenario, you take some stuff home and try again next year. With stuff like CCGs I just ended up doing comparable searches and a lot of guesswork based on the top-rarity items. That poo poo is really hard to sell but I think I'm at least getting a better idea of how to market it. For example, this year I'm trying to sell off Heroclix and I've been able to find a store that sells cheap clear plastic bins at $1-$2 - which is ideal. Minis need to look visible to the buyer, I think - that's one of the issues I think I've had with selling CCGs, is that people can't see what they're buying inside the box. I'm pretty sure Arcadia would have sold by now if people had a better idea of how rad it looks, particularly the cool pop-up cards. Hopefully my theory has weight and I'll be able to offload some ancient poorly-painted plastic. Still trying to figure out the best ways to handle collectible games, but I hope I'm making progress. Quarex probably knows more, I dunno. I'm thinking of trying a goofy TOVA idea this year if I can find the time.

Alien Rope Burn posted:
I have been doing it for just the last few years as well and I agree with everything here. There's some stuff (for instance, the Vampire the Requiem clanbooks) that I can't find being sold much of anywhere, even Noble Knight, so you have to guess or toss them in the auction and see. In those cases, they're hard to get now but maybe nobody wants them, so I tend to start a little under the original MSRP and discount over the three days. Whatever you do, don't go on Amazon and get dollar signs in your eyes. The only thing Amazon is really useful for is to see if people can buy a copy of the game new. If so, you're going to want to price cheaper than that, despite whatever you paid for it. But the very inflated used prices on there are pretty useless - those sellers can wait years for someone to bite, but you probably don't want to haul all your stuff back with you. Finding a way to show people what they're getting is also pretty important. The first year I tried to sell a whole set of Vampire novels but put them in a box. Didn't sell. The next year I wised up and sold them separately (generally better than selling in lots, IMO) so people could fill out their collections and see exactly what they were getting. All of them sold, and the total was more than I had expected for the set together. In general my fallback is to try and picture myself as the hypothetical buyer. Would I be annoyed at the condition or the price? If so, better knock a few bucks off. I try to price Thursday at, "Well, I'm not paying shipping and I can see what condition it's in". Friday I try to make a reasonable deal and Saturday is the lowest I would let it go for and should feel like an exciting find.

The hotel is 25 minutes to the south so that sounds like an expensive ride. I'll look into ParkWiz though.

It worked great and I highly recommend it. There was one day I couldn't get a reserved spot, so I just used street parking. Indy uses one of those apps instead of street parking meters for many of the sports around the convention center. So while you can only put in 2 hours or so at a time, you can get an alert on your phone and re-feed the meter remotely.

I used SpotHero for parking. Thursday is a couple blocks away for $7 (I have to be out of there by 7:30, but I have to check into the hotel anyway). Friday and Saturday, I am literally right across the street from the convention center, but it's $25 a day.

Almonds, cheese sticks, pork rinds, jerky. Lots of protein, salt, and fatty snacks. That plus plenty of water will keep you feeling satiated and energized. My favorite portable snack/meal is prosciutto and basil wrapped around mozzerella.
