Most of the initial emigres from Cuba were the families that were profiting from or assisting in the corruption of the Batista regime, or as previously said, they lost land, and as Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor once said, 'it's the only thing they're not making more of.' They're upset that they were forced to 'reset' the course of their lives and aren't hideously wealthy now after three generations of exploitation. It'd be like if in Casino the Italians came in and forced all the cowboys out, and the cowboys and their descendants spent the rest of their lives shaking their fists in rage from their exiles in Colorado and California.

This might be more appropriate for Cinema Discusso but since I can't resist I've gotta recommend that anyone interested in a different look at the Cuban revolution should check out the 1964 film I Am Cuba - it's a russian propaganda film made in Cuba with primarily Cuban actors (and some very amusing russians playing americans.) It was from a technical standpoint way ahead of it's time and did all kinds of groundbreaking scenes and shots, and was just a fantastically made bit of surreal communist propaganda - really good poo poo.

At the time it was released Russian and Cuban audiences didn't care for the very surrealistic and honestly weird feature (I can't remember 100% but I think it was at one point declared counter-revolutionary) and only actually got officially released in the states in the 90's despite being hugely popular and influential with quite a few big name directors. It's a pain in the butt to track down due to not being on any streaming sites but it's worth going out and watching despite being, y'know, an old russian propaganda film. If anyone is interested in the art of the time it will help give you an idea about how a lot of Cubans felt about the Batista regime (and the American's who supported it - they really figured out how to make us look pretty villainous)

This is one of my favorite film scenes ever

WARNING! INTRUDERS DETECTED

Torpor posted:

People seem to discount how hard it is to immigrate to most any country when talking about the US.

It's kind of apples and oranges comparing the US to other countries because US has really weird idiosyncrasies like nationality quotas (which would be expressly forbidden in a lot of other developed countries as discriminatory) and green card lotteries, which aren't necessarily a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but still matter. On the other hand the definition of family member used for immigration into the US is much wider than everywhere else, and RAISE would actually bring the US in line with other industrial countries in that respect.

Language requirements outside of naturalization are fairly rare outside of English-speaking jurisdictions because no one is seriously going to expect you to learn their moon language. I'm excluding intra-EU immigration here because it really is very straightforward compared to anything else.

By and large I'd describe the US system as having more potential lanes for immigration than most, but having worse bureaucracy and wait times than most as well. The idea of needing a lawyer's help for something as simple as immigrating as the spouse of someone who's already a citizen is strange. The US also has way way way more illegal immigration and stays, but this is 1) by and large integrated into the local economy, 2) not that significant in a highly decentralized country without national population registries where fact of residency is more important than more abstract citizenship, also, 3) the aforementioned horrible bureaucracy makes it understandable.

My only real worry with illegal/irregular immigration is that it places people outside of the protective umbrella of the law when it comes to health and safety, taxes and receiving fair pay. It makes people vulnerable to exploitation, so there should be safeguards for people without the right papers who have been made victims. But this umbrella's full of holes in the US anyway and the current ICE lunacy is forcing people even more underground than before. This is worse than anything paperless immigrants can cause themselves.

E.g. there's very little illegal staying in the Nordic countries in comparison because every single interaction with any state agency, bank, employer, etc. involves having to prove your identity and, if necessary, right of residence. Your right of residence is stored in a database that agencies can read if it's necessary, or you have to show a certificate, a residence permit card, etc. You either have to go really underground or you end up leaving.

In the US it's a lot easier to not have the right paperwork but still go to school, go to the hospital, go to work, etc. and essentially have a normal life. In the press there are a lot of US cases where the deportees would not ever get deported under these so-called strict immigration regimes because of existing family or work ties, instead you could just get a permit. So one of the contradictions in the US system is that through negligence and inefficiency, it allows people to integrate, but then kicks them out for not having crossed their Ts and dotted their Is. The Nordic welfare states try to keep you out but if you do get in and settle and integrate, they try to make it work for everyone before kicking you out.

Most people like that assume everyone knows that the emperor has no clothes, but think that everyone else doesn't and are afraid to speak up for fear of being shamed. It just takes one brave man to stand up, point at the naked emperor, and say "actually Hitler was right, and scientific racism is the only real science and :biotruths:" and everyone will go "oh my God I thought I was the only one, I don't have to be politically correct anymore" and women will be relieved to quit their jobs and go back to the kitchen where they always wanted to be, and black people will say "I'm so happy I don't have to pretend to be your intellectual equal anymore, and I can just shine shoes and whistle without a care in the world" etc etc, and all the liberal atheist professors who had pulled the wool over everyone's eyes would stammer out "diversity is good, banning diversity of opinions on segregation is anti-diversity, oh no that's bad, segregation is the true diversity, segregation is good" and disappear in a puff of logic

So basically he thought that would happen.

By all accounts, he was a brilliant student, shining himself into many top programs and research projects. He likely didn't finish his PhD in systems biology. I think a wide part of his disenchantment was being a just run-of-the-mill engineer at Google, and that he found himself not getting jerked off like he used to. I mean it's the quintessential expression of "equality feels like oppression to the privileged," I dipped into the Reddit thread and about three comments in they'd started on the "affirmative action is racist against white people, the process should be colorblind" talking points. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the libertarian techbro class really wants everyone to operate as if people were already equal and structural inequality didn't exist/has already been solved.

TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if George Soros being brought up in recent right-wing conspiracy culture was at the hand of the Russians, considering how intertwined those two entities are. Soros was relatively an unknown billionaire during the '80s and '90s, like Warren Buffet, who, like Buffet, backed liberal causes. The key thing (outside of the Jewish angle) is that Soros was a supporter of and donor to various freedom movements in Eastern Europe, like, I believe, Poland's Solidarity, which would obviously make him a global enemy to the recalcitrant reactionary Russians looking to rebuild their former glories. It also ties in heavily to both "paid protester" and "foreign/CIA meddling into others' election" memes, since being a donor meant that he was essentially subsidizing these movements into overthrowing Russian hegemony.

ehhhhhhhhh

Republicans were obsessing over Soros during the early Tea Party days too, he's not a new boogeyman. I bet you could find plenty of material claiming he was behind the Clintons back in the '90s.

The simpler answer is that Republicans have always been anti-Semitic, and their pro-Israel stance is more of a strategic position for hawks, subscription to fringe religious beliefs, and support of ethno-states that oppress Muslims. :v:

Single payer in CA is a non-starter until we have a federal government that will let the state re-direct Medicare and Medicaid funds to support it. With that in mind, it's no wonder that the Speaker shelved the bill rather than waste time writing a comprehensive bill (which really should have been written by the Senate before they passed their bill). It's not like we don't have plenty of other priorities that we actually can write legislation to address (their taking up a housing bill when they come back from recess cause we have a major housing crisis). They also have existing healthcare legislation that they have to write since the Coordinated Care Initiative needs to be re-written before In Home Supportive Services blows out county budgets.

We've got one of the best exchanges and Medicaid programs in the nation; Medi-Cal now covers 1 in 3 Californians. There's enough support that we'll eventually get some kind of UHC, but it's not gonna happen under this federal administration. Trying to blame Dems for is not happening now is childish pouting that ignores the reality of the situation.
